MANGALORE, Jul 14 (TOI): A mentally ill woman climbed a mobile tower, sparking off a traffic jam at the busy Balmatta road junction on Tuesday morning. Traffic slowed at Balmatta, Kankanady and Bendorewell-St Agnes roads as passersby strained to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.
The drama unfolded around 6.30am and ended after the woman eventually descended on her own around 9.30am, after chief fire officer Varadarajan succeeded in mollifying her.
Earlier when some persons tried to climb the tower, she threatened to jump down. Fire and police personnel were left with no choice but to watch and wait for the woman's next move.
The woman was taken to district Government Wenlock Hospital. She is under sedation, said in charge Mangalore assistant commissioner of police B J Bhandary, who was also present at the spot. He said the woman, who is under psychiatric care, had created a ruckus on Monday threatening people with a knife and the police lodged her at a hotel. She slipped out of the hotel on Monday night.
Varadarajan said mobile companies must post security at mobile towers. Free access to such high rise structures creates problems, seen elsewhere too in recent times, he added.
