Bengaluru, Mar 12: Health and family welfare minister Dr K Sudhakar, who is the in-charge minister for Chikkaballapur district, said he will try his best to ensure that 5 Tmcft of water from Krishna river in Andhara Pradesh is brought to the state to irrigate the dry lands of Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts.
Speaking at a function to mark the inauguration of the Amrut Mahotsav celebrations at Vidurashwatha to mark the 75 years of Indian Independence, he said bringing water from the Krishna river will help the perennial drought-prone farmers of the two districts of Chikkaballapur and Kolar which depend only on scanty rains.
Governor Vajubhai Vala and chief minister B S Yediyurappa inaugurated the Amrut Mahotsav celebrations to mark 75 years of Indian Independence.
Dr Sudhakar, who is also handling the medical education department, said a government medical college in the district is being constructed and it will start functioning by next year academic year.
The size of this year's State Budget may be downsized due to the disruption caused by the Covid pandemic. However, the chief minister has ensured social justice by presenting a budget which is slightly larger in size than the previous year.
The Budget which was presented on International Women's Day has a lot of new initiatives and higher allocation for the empowerment of women. Chikkaballpur district has also got its due with the promise on development of Nandi Hills and Yettinahole projects, he said.
The historical freedom movement site Vidurashwatha should be developed as an international memorial as several freedom fighters were martyred at this historic site in Vidurashwatha when Britishers fired bullets on them while hoisting the flag.
There is also religious significance to this place as it is believed that Vidura of Mahabharata planted the pious peepal tree here. It is also famous for Nagaradhane, he said.
Vidurashwatha has to be developed as an international monument given its historic and religious significance.
A detailed project report is ready in this regard and the project will cost about Rs 15-20 crore, said the minister and urged the CM for its implementation at the earliest, he added.
