Sometime back the NGT had appointed a committee of experts and asked it conduct a study about the adverse effect of the thermal power plant on the health of the people and submit a report.

The committee has said that lung infection and asthma have increased by 171 and 293 percent respectively in 15 villages located within a radius of ten kilometres from the UPCL plant. This is documented in government hospitals. This survey has not covered information and statistics that may be available in private hospitals.

The committee also has expressed the opinion that between 2010 and 2020, the locals have spent about Rs 74.93 crore towards treatment and to address ill effects of environmental damage caused by the plant.

Why Adani or Ambani? They are the business peoples. Let the government officials and politicians who gave green signal for the project, make them sit here.

Allowing a chemical unit to operate in middle of residential zone is utter nuisance. All residents and politicians should fight against such issues. Instead our politicians and environmentalist fight against developmental projects like making tunnels in Ghat Section, Attinahole Project, etc. How did they allow Adaani to put up a plant there? It is not late even now. Simply protest with no co-operation from local areas and Municipalities. They will have no option but to close the plant. If Sterlite could be closed, why not this?

And so it begins.. people of mangalore, your troubles have just started. The only way to survive the chemical industries is for mangaloreans to wake up and unite. How such dangerous industries were allowed to be setup in high populated areas in the first place..? Hope it’s not too late..

It is high time for closure of all sick polluting units. The plant can easily be converted into solar power plant as natural resource is available abundantly in coastal Karnataka. This project should not have been sanctioned in first place itself, considering ecosensitive coastal Karnataka.

Why this project is not abandoned and the Adani Group made to pay hefty fines for running a substandard unit? This project has changed many hands & it is a loss making venture. While there is so much thrust towards solar power, why not conver this project into solar one?

Dear Mr.Ramkrishna, You are perfectly right, but when top to bottom are corrupt, they don't want. Solar plant is less maintenance activities involved, so less work no kick back local contract work for maintenance. See authority gone to such extent to not to encourage the solar power. In early 2015 Govt purchase the solar power from individual at the rate of approx. 7.56.unit. Now it reduced to approx. 3.56 and billing is net metering. Because of this attitude, no individual is ready to invest huge amount to install soar, thus Govt can show the public shortage of power production and install the unhealthy power plants like UPCL at Nanidikoor.

Someone visited our college somewhere when thermal plant to come up decades back. Introducing himself as scientist, he explained that it is fantastic idea as the Ash gets into higher atmosphere and gets into clouds and when it rains, the entire area around gets more fertile. The awareness at that point of time on nature was really low. None questioned including lecturer's. It was great idea then, as farmers used to burn grass or so for ash to make their field fertile. Today, we are more aware of nature and environment back then. We see the ash leftover on banana plants leaves and trees spread by these thermal plants. It is sickening.
