Udupi, Jul 21: The villagers residing in the villages near the thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL - erstwhile Nagarjuna), say that their agricultural activities have been severely affected because of the hot, salty water and effluents mixed with coal dust being released by UPCL. Their anger has further been aggravated by the fact that a public road was washed away because of unscientific pipeline works executed by the company on Tuesday July 20.

A stretch of the public road located behind Tenka Yermal gram panchayat was washed away on Tuesday suddenly. The locals say that the road has become a victim of unscientific pipeline laying work executed by UPCL there. The farmers are frustrated at the loss they have been made to suffer because of hot, saline water, and effluents being discharged by UPCL plant into the canals that lead to their agricultural fields in Admar, Ulloor and Padebettu villages. In addition, the mud heaped at the spot where UPCL is constructing a pump house relating to its pipeline in Tenka Yermal, gets mixed with water, blocks the canals and gets deposited on their fields, robbing them of the chance to earn livelihood through agricultural activities, the villagers allege.

A few villagers who were interviewed, said that an earlier complaint lodged by them with the district administration, has not been acted upon. They say they have become helpless, as the government, policemen and district administration are siding with UPCL. They complain that the destruction of public road as above has compelled them to take a detour to reach their homes. After they received several such complaints, Tenka Yermal gram panchayat president, Jayashree Poojarti, and panchayat secretary, visited the spot on Tuesday and inspected the damage.

The panchayat had in the past, issued a notice to UPCL, seeking a compensation of Rs 1.20 lac towards the damage caused by it to the taluk panchayat road adjacent to the company’s pump house project. Although the panchayat had threatened to seek legal recourse in case of failure to pay compensation as demanded, the company it is said, has chosen to ignore the notice so far.

Nagarjuna is Udupi's Union Carbide ticking under us to expolode any day. It is still not too late. Villagers cannot keep blaming one another. Instead of asking what the other has done for you ask what we could do together. All must stand together and can still stop the project and force the company to move their equipments elsewhere. This plant is picked up from Chinese scrap yards and reconditioned. The Company has now applied for addl 1320 mw that would make it 2520mw.

It is unfortunate that we found impotent political leadership in the area along with some greedy local leaders who are in the payroll of the company. But if we can find a couple of Gregary Patro in our villages we can still win. We have two options either meekly submit and be blamed by the future generation as cowards or fight it out to the end.

As Vishu Shetty mentioned, this brings to mind the case of Gregory Patrao and the case of MRPL. That poor man is standing and daring a goliath company.

Huge cities like Mumbai, Calcutta, etc. have seen the hype of being the chosen ones of the huge companies .. and it did not take long to see the outcome of the expected prosperity. What locals had to pay for this prosperity? The examples are glaringly obvious. The huge companies have been looking for an alternative to stick their tentacles and Mangalore with vast open lands, easy access for businesses through air and sea .. is the one profitable avenue.

Acquisition of our farmlands and available open lands has been like a walk in the park for these business sharks. The general public should stand by the farmer and take up their issues. It is a known fact that a company like UPCL will even bother to acknowledge complaint from these poor farmers or for that matter, even the Panchayat.

If this example is not an eye opener, then are we waiting for the companies like UPCL to pollute our source of drinking water over ground and under ground or in a bigger picture – the sea, which is the source of our fishing business. I would like to see Mangalore progress – but do not want it to become concrete jungle with air pollution and water scarcity.

All politicians in India are "Desha drohi" book them in POTA. These politicians make a clear path to Naxalisum .... One day every one support them… it is a fear and end of INDIA’s democratic era……

    Dear V.Shetty, Kuwait.
    Really it is horrible.
You r right. Mr. Patrao made hunger strike all alone and shaken MRPL. Where as at Nandikoor, lot of Jana Jagrathi Samithis (JJS) were formed with dynamic leader and made protest for few week got retirement on medical ground (?) from his/her leader ship and new leader is formed. Here leader changed frequently and UPCL continued their work without any hindrances with the help of local admistrtave help (Police protection). Unity did not work out here.

I know only Mr. Balakrishna Shetty, Dubai, protested a lot, but without more support of JJS. It is our fate and are unfortunate to stay in the area soon will be like desert due to sea water ingress in the soil.

Will UPCL respond to the following question to know what the future of the area is?

    1) In the UPCL plant picture taken during the earlier release of saline water-cooling water tower. If cooling water towers are installed, then what is the need for sea water?
    2) How the ash collected at bottom ash hopper, electrostatic precipitator & ash
    dump area is cooled down?
    3) What cooling media is being used?
    4) Sea water or sweet water?
    5) If by sweet water, then from where the continuous large quantity of water
Is available? For make up water it self approx 400cubic meter water
Required for 500MW Thermal plant (Coal fired). In summer the local are people are striving for drinking water
    6) If sea water is being used for the purpose, then definitely it makes the entire
area desert and serous crime. The ash can not be used for bricks.

Very good. These villagers are very much intrested in BJP Govt. During the election time these people told BJP will provide better protection & administration.

Now your BJP will not do anything to poor farmers. They divided in the name of religion. When you are suffering no one is intrested in it.

If you people not listen the Companies advise then BJP Govt will forcefuly throw you out with the help of gunda's & police.

Very good BJP Govt keep it up.

What else we can expect from corporate thermal power company only fly ash & waste drain. These corporate companies are like cockroaches once they enter inside that will there emperor .Who care about poor former in India .Electricity become more essential than rice , environment .Protest will not work against these giants they won’t mind because they have government to back .This will only lesson for others who support thermal power plants .Lot of influential people in Padubidri ,Nandikoor area can put pressure on government but they will not all expect more business from Nagarjuna not well wish from those poor farmers .

One Patravo can make 600 Core loss to MRPL why can’t we ? .Kolachuru people surrendered land to Nagarjuna and acted as they are opposing in past . People of nandikoor please be stay united fight against this injustice
