Bengaluru, Mar 26: The Congress party has named former minister Satish Jarkiholi, MLA and brother of BJP leader Ramesh Jarkiholi, who had to resign over the sex CD scandal from the B S Yediyurappa ministry, as the candidate for the by-election to the Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency.

The by-election is scheduled to be held on April 17 to fill up the vacancy caused by the death of the union minister Suresh Angadi.

In a bid to encash on the sympathy factor due to the popularity of Suresh Angadi, the ruling BJP has named his widow Mangala Angadi as its candidate even though the name of state industries minister Jagadish Shettar surfaced to contest from the seat.

The AICC, in its press release on Friday, said Congress president Sonia Gandhi has approved the candidature of Satish Jarkiholi as the party’s candidate to contest the ensuing by-election to the Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency.

Satish Jarkiholi is representing the Yemakanmardi reserve constituency (ST) in the Legislative Assembly. He served as the minister in the previous coalition government led by H D Kumaraswamy and the Siddaramaiah government. He also served as the MLC.

Satish Jarkiholi is the brother of BJP MLAs Ramesh Jarkiholi and Balachandra Jarkiholi.

The state government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the sex CD episode.
