Mangaluru: DC permits performing of religious services during Holy Week inside church premises

Mangaluru, Mar 30: Fr Maxim Noronha, vicar general of Mangalore diocese has written a letter to the district deputy commissioner Dr Rajendra requesting permission to hold religious programmes on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this week in the churches of the diocese.

In the letter, he stated that there are 124 churches that have observed the Covid guidelines after the relaxation of Covid restrictions.

The Holy Week for the Catholic community began on March 29 and will go on till April 4 celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ with 40 days spent in special prayers and penance. Special masses and prayers have been scheduled on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this week in all the churches in the diocese. These celebrations have been practised for centuries explained the letter.

The government has issued an order which includes restrictions on gathering to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection.

"We request your permission to hold the programmes with only 50% of the seating capacity in the open, while adhering to social distancing, following Covid guidelines on the following dates: Thursday April 1, Friday April 2, Saturday April 3 and Sunday April 4," the letter stated.

The DC assured to review the order and clarified that there are no restrictions on religious services that are conducted inside the church premises. However, the DC has prohibited cultural activities from taking place.

    The question of giving permissions when it's once decided, in the interest of public health, that no community functions should be held is just an appeasing tactic to fool the gullible and put their lives in jeopardy! Can't these religious rituals be not postponed instead of overriding scientific protocol?

    Why there are restrictions only for particular community ? Is the pandemic limited to a particular community and particular geographical area? When the elections are taking place in some of the state, where PM, HM ,CM are campaigning and mass gathering are found, why there is no restrictions for them? Rudoph, It looks like you do not go to Church. If you are going, you would have known the reality in the Churches. Have you seen any Ill health person attending the Church services. People with good health have restrained going to the Church with fear of CoViD. How can you expect the CoVid persons to go to the Church. Moreover, the SOP is very strictly followed in the Churches especially where this order of DC is applicable. When they allow more than 500 Students in college campus, in the market places, in the Malls, why there is restrictions only in the Religious places.? How can these So Called Learned people commit such a blunder without taking in to consideration all these things. ? Lets us pray for these people in the words of Jesus " Father, Forgive them, they know not what they do/say"

    The biasing is obvious, only for vote bank! If people from other religions do what they want they will face the consequences; why we have to beg? In Maharashtra, the entire state is clamped down from 8pm to 7am irrespective of religion; what natak is going on here where left hand doesn't know what the right is doing??

    The corona has special characters. It will not touch people in yaksha Ghana cinema theatre or mall. etc. The section 144 is a beautiful character it restricts group of 5 people gathered in yskshagana mall theatre etc doesn't apply. The section issued to control by a doctor effective from 29 issued on 30 . Virus is so controllable by administrative order. No effects of virus on 29 and silent. Wonderful things happen

    Yes, Corona is extremely unpredictable. It becomes over active and dangerous during Eid, Christmas and Easter. During temple gatherings and political rallies it becomes dormant.

    Each person in authority is giving his own independent diktat, which is very ridiculous in times of instant connectivity; it sounds we are still in times of stone age! If conditions require, in the safety of the general population, where comes the question of begging for permission & on what basis such irrational permissions are issued? Always public safety should be first based on scientific basis rather than requests based on religious grounds! Why only 200 or 500; why not 1000! Does anyone have any doubt that the crowd can or will follow the restrictions? Such restrictions are not feasible in an overpopulated, ignorant, poor, hungry country filled with religious dogmas etc? Even the creator will be angered by such religion based decisions!

    Just because permission is granted, we shouldn't take things lightly. Even now I've noticed people in church and other public places wearing masks for their chins and necks. Some people cover only the mouth and not the nose. The permission is given in good faith. It is up to us to follow the rules or choose to act stupid.

    Thanks to the DC for his enlightened order on Holy Week celebrations. Apart from religious services, many cultural programs were linked to this sad/happy week. One of them was MM Night at the outdoor plaza of Bondel Church complex. It was to be the 10th Nite of Macha since his 9th Nite 20 years ago. It was to be held last year and was cancelled because of Corona 19. Now , if there is no permission for out door performance, the organisers ca think of studio- recording and, like in Daijiworld studio, and releasing it on the several outlets. I hope the the pramis of Maccha Bondel will rise to the occasion - and quickly

    He wanted the religious people to come to his feet & beg. I am sorry but that's the fact. He should have thought or consulted the Bishop or other religious heafs before taking decisions So there is nothing to thank in that. He threw a stone thinking that the community would keep quiet

    Paul Mangalore,Dear friend,now dont try to find negetive here.We should be happy atleast they allowed us this with all so many positive cases around.we here dont have that.no Public .Sometimes we too must see the reality that lies in front of our eyes.Even when they said "NO "have to accept.we can pray from home too when no possibility is there we ourselves have including all reason for spreading it without taking proper care and distance.But God knows it and try and pray atleast next year can join together and celebrate it without problems.Wish you all a happy Easter without Corona.
