New Delhi, Jul 25 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday said former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, accused in the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout, has abided by the law in resigning.

"He (Shah) has not received the chargesheet yet, but still he resigned," party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

He said Shah, former Gujarat minister of state for home, had followed the rule of the land. "According to the law if a person gets a summons, he has the right to send his lawyer on his behalf...he is following the law," Javadekar told NDTV.

Javadekar also said there was no drama behind Shah's appearance at a press conference in Ahmedabad. At the press conference, Shah claimed the allegations against him were "fabricated and politically motivated".

Shah, who had been missing since Thursday, has been charged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Sheikh's killing. He submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Narendra Modi Saturday.

Javadekar once again accused the Congress of continuously using the CBI against its opponents.

"When it comes to its opponents, it tries to harass them to the maximum and the people of India are watching this behaviour of the CBI," he said.
