Customs officials seize over Rs one crore worth gold at Mangaluru International Airport

Mangaluru, Apr 3: Officers of Customs at Mangaluru international airport seized gold worth Rs 1,18,71,430 from three passengers Friday March 2 and Saturday March 3.

In the incident on Friday, the officials intercepted two passengers, Abdul Salam Maniparambu and Mohammad Ashraf, both hailing from Kasargod, for smuggling gold in paste form into the country. Abdul Salam had disembarked the Indigo flight coming from Sharjah in the late hours of Thursday and Asraf had disembarked from Air India flight coming from Dubai from where they tried to smuggle gold by concealing in the press buttons of jeans shirts and gold chains concealed in shoes worn by one of the passengers. Gold of net weight 576 grams valued at Rs 26,43,840 was seized. Further investigation is under progress.

The operation was led by Praveen Kandi, IRS, deputy commissioner. Crucial role of surveillance and interception was executed by superintendents Rakesh, C M Meena and Ashish Verma.

In the incident on Saturday, the officials intercepted a passenger by name Mohammed Ashif (28) hailing from Ullal. He had disembarked the Air India flight coming from Dubai from where he tried to smuggle gold by concealing in a specially designed inner garment, jeans trouser and knee pads. Gold of net weight 1.993 kg valued at Rs 92,27,590 was seized. Further investigation is under progress.

The operation was led by Avinash Kiran Rongali IRS, deputy commissioner. Crucial role of surveillance and interception was executed by superintendents Srikanth and Satish along with inspector Praful.

    I think people of our coastal area press for this gold smuggled money to be utilized in infrastructure works in coastal area and then you see...many people purposely avoid Mangalore Airport for smuggling

    Only now we are getting daily data of gold smuggling being caught at mangalore airport. Just imagine how much smuggling used to happen before 2018. Also smuggling through boats in high seas is still going onn.
