Mangaluru, Apr 3: A second-floor flat located in Sturrock Apartments on Sturrock Road in the city caught fire at about 9:00 pm on Saturday, April 3. An electrical short circuit initiating from a faulty refrigerator is suspected to be the cause of the fire. A fire brigade immediately arrived on the scene and brought the fire under control within half an hour. There was no injury or casualty as there was no one living in the flat at the time of the mishap.

A fireman said the main door had been locked and they had to break the door to gain entry into the house. A building resident said flat B2 belongs to Dr Nithin Suvarna and who has rented out the apartment to students.

Electricity to the entire building was temporarily cut off and the building was also evacuated during the operation as a safety measure.

This is a big problem if you rent out apartment specially to students both girls/ boy no difference. The apartments residents association should take a call regarding renting out apartments to students. Students are not responsible not only regarding electrical irresponsibility even water. Last year there was a case when during the lockdown girls living in a apartment rushed back home leaving the water purifier on and later after one or two months the residents living in the lower floors were effected because of the water flowing to their apartment. People rent out their apartments to students because they earn good returns on their investment.

Girls students on an average are more cleaner and hygienic, than the boy students, tend to use more water and every third day they will get their bed sheets and other laundry done. Girls will keep the bathrooms clean but water bill will always be more for the landlord. Boy students usually have drinking parties, so more messy and tend to use electricity more by not switching off light, fan etc when they are not there. Also for some reason, the walls also become more dirty with boy students maybe because they don't wear shirt or teeshirt in the house, and will lean against the wall. Also switch areas will be dirty. Everytime end up painting when renting out to boys
