Mangalore, Aug 1: Bringing back the memories of Kettikallu landslide, a massive landslide has been witnessed at Eliyar of Amblamogaru panchayat in the taluk that has left four houses damaged on Sunday August 1.

The houses of residents, Krishnappa, Keshav Poojary, Devu Poojary and Shantaram Rai have suffered damages. According to the residents, they heard a crackling noise at around 2.00 am which they ignored. However, in the morning they realized the extent of damage. A daivastana of Panjurli deity has also been damaged.

Huge cracks have appeared on the hill behind these dwellings threatening to slide any moment on further development, which is being noticed. The land too has caved in. Residents complain that no authorities have visited the spot so far and urged the concerned to take necessary measures.

Government agencies like CPWD and Railways do not follow basic soil mechanics when they carry out excavation. The excavation must not be carried out at an angle greater than angle of repose which varies with soil nature. If there is a space restriction, retaining walls must be built. I have studied CPWD specification for excavation works and it does not even have a clause for the deep permanent excavation!. In fact I have filed a case against CPWD in Mangalore for cutting the earth steeply next to my residential plot in Mangalore and sent them references from British Specification.
