Maharashtra Kannadigas’ Third Literary, Cultural Convention Concludes

Mumbai, Aug 5: Maharashtra Kannadigas’ third literary and cultural convention concluded at Karnataka Sangha auditorium, Matunga, here, recently. The convention was held under the aegis of Karnataka Kannada Sahitya Parishad, Bangalore and metro-based Karnataka Sangha.

Dr G N Upadhya, head of the department, Kannada in Mumbai University presided.

In his presidential address he said that the need of the hour in our multi-religious and diverse linguist-based country is harmony.  The conventions are helpful in staging struggle for social justice through literary works.  Kannada – Marathi has more significance in its correlation, he added.

He further cited the example of freedom fighter Bala Gangadhar Tilak who had stressed the brotherly bond that thrived between Kannadigas’ and Marathis’ during the pre-Independence era. Dr B R Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution had the aspirations to begin Kannada department in Khalsa College, he added.

P S Karanth Vapi and Nanda Shetty Kalyan (organizing skills), lawyer Rohini J Salian (public prosecutor), Dr Leela B (research), M S Rao Ahmedabad (literary), K S Hegde Pune (education), Chandrashekar Palettady (journalism) and S K Haleyangady Baroda (literary) were honoured for their extraordinary contribution in their respective fields.

Karnataka Sangha – Kalyan vice-president T S Upadhya welcomed the gathering. Billavara Association vice-president compered the programme. Kannada Sahitya Parishad – Maharastra Unit honorary secretary Dr Karunakar Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
