Bengaluru, May 12: After the state government announced its decision to vaccinate even those in the age group of 18 to 44 years, the demand for the vaccine has shot up. People stood in long queues in front of the vaccination centres both in the city and elsewhere in the state. Many of them had to return disappointed.

On Tuesday, people in large numbers made a beeline for the vaccination centres. As a result, big crowds were formed in certain locations, which gave rise to confusion and chaos. At several places including Udupi and Davanagere, people who lost patience, entered into arguments with health department staff. At Ballari, because of the large number of people flocking the vaccination centres, people scrambled for space.

People with valid registrations disappointed

Many of the people went back without tokens after visiting the vaccination centres with valid advance registrations. This happened in the city and elsewhere. In several places, people came to the centres early in the morning but had to return after waiting for long. As people of all the age groups came for vaccination, aged people had to spend long hours under hot sun for several hours. Similar scenes were witnessed in places like Kolar, Hassan, Chitradurga, Kalaburagi and Yadagiri.

Vaccinations for above 18 age group has begun in Dharwad district but the youngsters were seen waiting for the receipt of the vaccine. In districts like Belagavi and Bagalkot, only a second dose was given. In Ballari district, demand was more than the stock of vaccine and therefore, those who came for a second dose were sent back. In Uttara Kannada, target of 150 vaccinations per centre was set and those who registered in advance only were entertained.

The chief minister asked people not to create commotion as vaccines are distributed as and when received. At the same time, people have been advised to maintain social distance, wear masks and use sanitisers when waiting at the vaccination centres.
