Bangalore: Infosys Manager Confesses to Killing Wife, held
BANGALORE, Aug 14 (TOI): Sathish Gupta killed his wife, DPS teacher Priyanka, in cold blood on Tuesday morning but it’s not yet clear why he did it. In the face of damning mobile phone evidence, he admitted to the crime on Friday, and by evening, Bangalore police arrested him.
Sathish craftily tried to leave clues that someone else had killed Priyanka. Once he realized he was nailed, he tried to implicate his childhood friend and jogging partner Kishan, saying they’d murdered the 29-year-old teacher.
Police always had a hunch that it was a murder for gain. All the evidence indicated it was an insider and the first suspect was always 32-year-old Sathish, an HR manager with Infosys.
Sathish had said when he was out jogging, he received a phone call from Priyanka who told him there were two strangers at the door asking about delivering newspapers. The call details indicated there was a 40-second call from Priyanka to Sathish and police decided to probe it. Kishan told the police that Sathish called him early in the morning and asked him to join him for jogging. After a while, Kishan called back to cancel the plan. But, Sathish said he’d reach Kishan’s house in two minutes.
Within the next 5 minutes, Sathish came and picked him up and they went to a ground near RBI Layout. After parking the motorcycle, Sathish picked up the phone and said, ‘‘I have not asked anybody to come, just send them away.’’ Kishan also said he didn’t hear the phone ring.
When police checked Sathish’s call details, they found one call to Kishan and then a 40-second call from Priyanka’s mobile. The third call was from Kishan. The RBI Layout ground has a different mobile tower from the one near Sathish’s house. However, at the time of Priyanka’s call, both phones were in the same tower range, which proved he hadn’t reached the ground when the call from Priyanka’s mobile came and he hadn’t even left the house.
When the police confronted Sathish with these facts, he was stunned. First, he admitted to the murder and then suddenly changed his statement, saying he loved her very much.
