Twenty-two Beggars Died 'Naturally' in Three days, Claims Govt

Bangalore, Aug 20 (PTI): The state government, battling a public outcry over the death of 22 beggars in a government-run relief centre here in last three days, on Friday termed the casualties as ''natural deaths''.

The government, however, has ordered an emergent medical report after assessing the causes behind their deaths, as two more persons admitted in hospitals with symptoms of gastroenteritis died last night.

A four-member ministerial team led by Home Minister V S Acharya rushed to Beggars Relief Centre for an on-the-spot inspection today and spoke to inmates who were found in a pathetic condition. He also held a meeting with officials.

Acharya, himself a medical doctor, said "doctors have certified all the deaths as natural. However, I have asked Commissioner for Social Welfare Department to submit a report by tomorrow on the causes that led to the death of beggars".

Talking to reporters after speaking to several inmates at the Beggars Relief Centre, Acharya announced a slew of measures, including setting up of an Expert Committee to suggest improvements at the centre, which is "overcrowded".

As against the capacity to house 900 beggars, the centre has more than 2,500, he said.

On the sudden surge in the number of deaths, Acharya said majority of the inmates were suffering from chronic diseases. Terminally-ill patients were also there.

Several of them had low levels of immunity and mortality rate was high among such people, he said.

He directed officials in charge of the centre to ensure that the inmates get good quality food and potable drinking water. He also asked them and stop the inmates from drinking polluted water as some of them were mentally challenged.

Minister for Water Resources Basavaraj Bommai, Minister for Law S Suresh Kumar and Minister for Social Welfare D Sudhakara accompanied Acharya.

Hey guys, there seems to be no humanity in politics. A politician is never bothered about the others specially in those things s/he has no profit. Even if we write another 1000 requests, I bet, it'll never move a single hair from their body!
Rahul Gandhi asked the youth, the other day, to join politics and bring in a change. Will it bring any good?
At the centre, there has been 200% hike in the MP's salary and they are demanding more.. how pathetic!
I have a serious concern about the future of these inmates.
Can we bring CHANGE? Can any one bring CHANGE? We'll have to wait n watch.
    I just pray for it....

The basic problem with this government is , it doesnt know how to govern a state. If such a government cant take care of a state, how can it take care of a country as huge, as diverse as India

Natural death is possible because of the changes of living conditions and sudden changes in thier diet, It was unnoticed by general public when these beggers used to die unnoticed in different places. Now it is noticeable , since the death has occured in an confined area . They can die only for three reasons, natural death due to some chronic diseases . Food poisioning , or mass killings, which can be easily identified by present technology .

What nonsense a minister is talking. How can 22 beggers can die within 3 days? He was talking that they were dying due to chronic diseases and their immune system was weak. Earlier they did not have chronic diseases and immune deficiencies. You people can conduct rallies and can spend croes of public money but can you not increase their immunity? The state is under utter anarchy.

How come 22 begars die at one time of natural causes. The gogvt must have gne insane and think that the people of karnataka are fools to beleive in what they say. A thorough enquiry must be conducted and an NGO must be given the responsibility of such enquiry. These poor beggars have no one at their side to fight for justice. I think it is one of the ways of the BJP govt in erradicating beggary.

    Mr. Yedi,
Instead of your 4 Jana samevsha of spending in crores you could have utilised these amounts on these poor beggars by giving good food, medical treatment and proper living conditions.

Beggars Relief Centre should be more organised. There should be proper care of their hygiene condition. Most of them suffer from skin diseases and they don't have regular bathing facilities. There should be skill developement centres within the centre and train as per their aptitude test result. Don't treat them like sub-human instead bring them out of their misery and make them a productive human being.
