Bangalore: Beggars' Death Toll Mounts to 26, CM Inspects Relief Centre

Bangalore, Aug 21: Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, who visited the Beggars’ Relief Centre on Saturday August 21, had to hear sordid and grim stories of beggars even as the death toll in the state government-run centre mounted to 26 with four more cases reported since last night.

The chief minister was accompanied by minor irrigation minister Govind M Karjol and newly-appointed minister in charge of social welfare department. Yeddyurappa said the government would take all steps to probe the deaths at the Beggars’ Relief Centre, besides providing a better deal to the beggars.

Yeddyurappa said deputy commissioners in all the districts have been asked to personally inspect and take adequate steps to look after the beggars housed in 13 centres located in different parts of the state to prevent recurrence of similar tragedies.

Like a new broom sweeping clean, Karjol, who has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of the social welfare department, said the government would try and contact the neighbouring states in order to send the beggars back to their native lands as out of the 2300 inmates currently housed in the relief centre as many as 1800 were from other states.

At least 825 are from Tamil Nadu, 625 from Andhra Pradesh and 125 each from Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, Karjol said and added that the government was in touch with these states to send them back. He said the warden of the Beggars Relief Centre, against whom complaints had piled up would be removed shortly.

The chief minister inquired with the inmates about their treatment at the centre. Though nobody seemed to be interested in mentioning their sorry plight, several persons were seen pleading that they should be allowed to go out rather than being confined.

Yeddyurappa said three more doctors and 10 paramedical staff would be deployed soon to provide medical aid to inmates. Steps would be taken to provide good food and three pairs of clothes to all the inmates, besides giving priority to cleanliness.

The chief minister asked the newly appointed social welfare minister to take steps to provide 32 toilets and 16 bathrooms as part of the drive to ensure cleanliness at the Beggars’ Relief Centre.

Meanwhile, former chief minister and state JD(S) chief H D Kumaraswamy, who called on the governor H R Bhardwaj demanded that a comprehensive probe be conducted into the functioning and deaths of beggars at the Beggars’ Relief Centre on Magadi Road.

Kumaraswamy told reporters after meeting the governor that he had requested Bhardwaj to personally visit the centre for an on-the-spot inspection.

Twenty six beggars died like an
epidemic attack, who were under the control
    of a government run agency!

The CM and a few other people are
    wearing facial mask to protect
    themselves from bacterial infection
or due to foul smell. But the
    majority, including the beggars
    are mask-free.

If this service is not handed over
    to a charitable organization with
    dedicated and compassionate
groupe of people, more death will
    take place like a routine.

    Those helpless people had nobody
to care of them. May God give
peace and rest for the departed
    souls.

Just look at the pictures. They are all dalits. Are thy not human beings like you, me, CM and other upper caste people??? Is their God is different from our God??? Because of preaching and practicing of untouchability and caste sysem by a section of people who are powerful in society, these dalits shall never change their social status and attain supremacy. They were made as beggars and dumped into a cell in the pretext shame on those who practice, advocate, preach and defend untouchability and caste system.

These centers are called rehabilitation centres- I want the ministers as well as concerned officers to reveal how many people are rehabilitated all these years, their names as well as their present addresses(Probably in neither world).A facility meant for 950, but 2500 were interned-just like our overcrowded jails-just imagine what the plight of these hapless people was. There were many who were caught wrongly( who were rag pickers) & confined in this inhuman hellish place-A clear violation of Human Rights. Who wanted to reatin these people(to pocket the money granted by govt., for their welfare).

Why our politicians irrespective of party using masks-as if they were treading on epidemic scorned contagious ground. If all were normal deaths, why fear these surroundings. Gastro-enteritis was the official reason till now from RMO. When first media entered the place with cameras I felt as if visiting concentration camps set up by Hitler in II World War.

Why are they wearing surgical masks? At least show basic courtesy and treat the inmates with some dignity. Otherwise, why visit them?

Need of the hour is a law that prohibits beggars' slaughter. Looks like the CM is in a morgue conducting post mortem. Why is he wearing a mask to hold a food plate which is supposed to be eaten by the inmates? If the CM does not want to smell it, how then the inmates can eat it? Disgusting!

I see two types of beggars here. Those who are wearing khaki dress and sitting at the feet of CM are the real beggars who are harmless beg for their survival. Who have absolutely no bank account and they do not need rehabilitation but the persons in white are professional beggars and dangerous. They beg in the name of poor to fill their belly, to feed their family and to remain in power. They need rehabilitation. Believe me folks...
