Mangalore, Aug 25: Rains, which gained in intensity since Tuesday August 24 afternoon, continued to lash the coast all through the evening and night. Choked drains, spread out debris, damaged and flooded roads and power failure caused lot of problems for the residents of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

As water level in River Kumaradhara rose suddenly, bridge to Subrahmanya built across the river got inundated. Long lines of vehicles with pilgrims in them were seen waiting on both sides for the water level to recede, to reach and leave the temple town. Buses bound for Bangalore took the Panja-Kadaba-Gundia route.

Udupi taluk received normal rains with Karkala reporting heavy rains. A house owned by Sripati in Kemmannu, Padutonse near Udupi collapsed, inflicting a loss of Rs 80,000 on the owner. In Sullia taluk, several bridges have gone under water, and a couple of minor bridges face the prospects of collapsing, as these old structures are being hit repeatedly by trees flowing along the flood water.

The meteorological department said that the coast and southern hinterlands are likely to receive normal to heavy rains during the next two days. At the same time, northern hinterlands will experience light to normal rains, it predicted.
