Mangalore, Aug 27: In a fire accident that occurred at the storeroom of a mattress manufacturing unit located in Mundoly near Kuttar, Someshwar village near Ullal on Thursday August 26, cotton stocks worth about six lac rupees was reduced to ashes.
The unit belongs to Mohammed Fayaz from Katipalla. When the tragedy occurred presumably because of electric short circuit, those working inside the unit ran to safety. As such, no loss of lives or injuries occurred.
As the unit is located inside the residential area that is not accessible for heavy vehicles, the fire tenders which arrived about an hour after the accident, had to lay about half a km long pipes to spray water on the flames. The residents worked with the employees of the unit to ensure that the fire does not spread to the neighbourhood. Two Sintex water tanks, pipe and pumpset located next to the unit, were burnt down in the accident.
When local MLA, U T Khader, visited the spot, the locals expressed their anguish at issuing licences to such hazardous units located in residential area, which is not accessible by proper roads. The MLA assured them to take up the matter with the concerned. A complaint was filed with the Ullal police station about the accident.
