Mangaluru, Jun 12: An old well was found underneath Navbharath circle after its demolition. The old well was covered by a concrete slab, which collapsed during the demolition work on Friday June 11. It is said that well is around 20 years old.

Mayor Premananda Shetty visited the site and examined the spot.

Decades ago, Navbharath, which was a leading newspaper in Mangaluru, had its printing press here, due to which the circle was named Navbharath Circle. The circle was not maintained properly and hence lost its beauty. The circle was used to display posters and banners.

The mayor had earlier clarified that the circle is being demolished under Smart City project as it was unscientifically constructed and traffic jams were common in the area. He also said that the circle will be rebuilt scientifically and there would be no change in its name.

A similar well was found at Hampankatta which is said to be a hundred years old. The well was called ‘Appanna’ well. The name ‘Appanna’ later went on to become Hampankatta.

John Tauro Mangalore. Sir, you are right. Nearly 65 years back the " Jatka "stand was in side the old bus stand. They feed water to horses from that well.

I think nearly 100 years back in Mangalore there were more well in every area, because that time horse cart was the main transportation. It was made for drinking water for horses. Like In famous Pumpwell, lLeevel, Falnir, Now Navbharat circle. I think after smart city project, there will be full of water in all places. And city will be called as" MANGALORE WELL CITY. "

Something doesn't seem to be right here. We have a well which is at least 80 year old. Why is it a big news to find a 20 year old, that too covered with concrete?! Can someone please explain..

I remember even 30 years ago the Navabharath Circle was same as we see today. No well was visible even during the early 1990s. So this well cannot be less than 50 years old.

Those days Navabharath kannada paper ised to be very popular for Mangalreans, evening Sandya deepa English Indian Express or times of India. Delivery boys would not come to door step to drop the paper rather they were so accurate in throwing the paper from a distance from their delivry cycle. Why to pteserve old wells ? The water in such water must have contaminated due non circulation and without not being exposed to sun light.
