Udupi, Aug 31: Udupi Power Corporation Ltd, having its thermal generation plant near Padubidri in the district, has often been in the news for wrong reasons. After earning the wrath of the locals for adversely affecting their crops by releasing its poisonous water into their fields, it had sought a time of ten days to take corrective steps. However, it continues to discharge effluents into fields, playing with the livelihood of the people and disregarding its earlier promises.

The company has been releasing hot, saline water mixed with coal ash, into the streams and agricultural fields located in its neighbourhood, instead of the sea, since the last four to five months. As repeated warnings failed to have any effect on the company, the people had gathered at the main gate of the company on August 17, seeking immediate redressal of their grievances. People from  Padebettu, Yellur, Nandikoor, Ulloor, Kemmundelu, Yermal and surrounding villages, who are affected by the negligent attitude of the company, had come together to stage a protest on this occasion.

Kundapur assistant commissioner, B Sadashiva Prabhu, who had personally received the memorandum submitted by the protestors on August 17, had promised to hand over the same to the district deputy commissioner, and find a lasting solution to the problem within ten days thereof. He also said that if the need is felt, he would undertake an inspection of the facilities inside the power company’s premises. He had also warned the company to mend its ways within the said deadline. The company, which has not paid any heed to the instructions of the official, continues to release harmful water into the streams and fields without any break.

The release of the effluents by the said company has been playing with the lives of the people living in the neighbourhood of the company, who heavily depend on agricultural income for their livelihood.  There have also been complaints of allergies and rashes having appeared on the skins of the farmers, who have come in contact with the water discharged by the company. A number of wells have been polluted, creating drinking water problem for the villagers.

Public Plan Intense Protest

The villagers have been frustrated over the inaction of the officials to their protests. They are mustering manpower and drawing up plans to stage a stronger protest, having been determined to drive home their point of view and convince the government and officials to take drastic action, as they have so far turned a deaf ear to their problems.

Nature is calling out people to help themselves. It is a shame we gave in so easily to corrupt local politicians and businessmen who earn by polluting the atomosphere and destroying our livelihood. We will be called traitors by our grandchildren for not leaving clean environment from them which actually we borrowed from them.

I do not agree to your comment. There is no dearth of environmental engineers in our country. The problem lies with poor implementation of regulatory mechanism and poor legal system. Now one more law 'National Green Tribunal Act' is in the offing which proposes heavy penalties on polluters. But given the history this act will also go down the same way with other acts in the country.

Its time to repent for not allowing International airport in Padubidri by these residents, and now they got the most dangerous project. Because of this today we have an airport almost between the clouds, to experience this travel from Udupi hundreds of feets above sea level. This is the fate.

Why we give comments, myself doesn't know. Still, I give. Giving comments is like pouring water on the Bandekallu else "Bains ke aage Bansuri bajana." UPCL started functioning, but there is always power cut in Udipi and Mangalore area. Did UPCL solve the probelms of farmers or residents of divided districts of South Kanara. Instead it has increased problems of farmers and residents and also health problems to neighbouring villages. Our politicians and village leaders only come/visit and say we will see and next day forget. Human life is not safe by pollution, vehicle movements in poor quality of roads. God only can help to poor farmers and neighbouring villages of UPCL.

UPCL clearly violates the pollution control board regulation & CRZ notification. Now we could see only 5 percent of the emission, if the plant functions in full swing, crops, fresh water, health in 10-15 km radius will be worst affected. There is another threat to fisheries when flyash & hot effluents are going to be released into the sea.
This project is a fraud on the nation. It is neither economically viable nor environmentally. why Govt. wants power plants in an ecologically sensitive area

This adverse condition is the precise reason why India must have environmental and energy engineers to balance the environment and power generation without adversely impacting the environment and people. Instead, our engineering colleges from Mangalore to Udipi/Manipal are engaged in producing electronics engineers collecting donations for every seat to serve USA and the rest of the world forgetting the need of India. Now the India Govt. is crying over the increased visa fees by USA for software industry. Start thinking about India and its resources, and people and environment. Let us solve our problems first.

UPCL authorities and Government of Karnataka should spend little more money to connect the effluents from the plant to sea. Please dont forget that the people in this area have given thier lands on the promises that the environment will not be disturbed. So, kindly keep your promises and respect the people's lives.
