Grant full statehood, conduct elections in J&K, says Congress

New Delhi, Jun 20 (IANS): Ahead of Prime Minister's meeting with leaders from Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress on Sunday said that restoring full statehood and conduct of elections is a way forward to restore democracy.

Addressing a press conference here, Randeep Singh Surjewala, the party general secretary, said, "Let me draw your attention towards the Congress working committee resolution on August 6, 2019 whereby it clearly demanded restoration of the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. We believe that and undoing it is a direct attack on the democracy and the constitutional principles."

"Indian National Congress believes grant of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir as also holding elections so that people are able to elect their representatives instead of a rule by Delhi, is the only way forward to guarantee full democratic right." he added.

He said, "now it's for the prime minister and the BJP to decide whether to hold a meeting or to accept the demands of the Indian National Congress, the interest of the constitution and the people of the state."

The statement comes after prime minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold an all-party meeting on Jammu and Kashmir, a first such move since the abrogation of Article 370 from the region and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories in August 2019, sources said.

The meeting will be held in Delhi as the central government wanted to restart the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir.

These days Congress is demanding what the govt would do anyway in a few days ..When they were in power they could not abrogate article 370 ..but was so weak ..they had to play into pak and chinese hands ..Remember 26/11 happened and no action on pak when congress was in power. The problem with states is their corruption index ..

A sensible proposition to end the stalemate in J&K by granting full statehood to them and allowing them to decide like all other states in our country. The cost of keeping such a huge armed forces in Kashmir will drain us financially .

BJP will never grant statehood to J&K - they know that all the national parties will form a coalition government and oust BJP out of power in J&K. And by the way, protecting India from enemies across the border and internal terrorism is the job of the Army - BJP can't take credit for this.

Conducting elections in J&K to restore democracy with full statehood is equal to restoring article 370 once again which BJP can not afford and against its idealogy and a big insult to whatever mess BJP has created with votes in mind. BJP will be fully exposed if elections are held in J&K.

This is an appropriate suggestion and suggests a change of strategy by Congress. Full statehood is key to democracy but not special status as J&K enjoyed which had been removed and for which there was previously intense opposition by Congress, playing into the hands of Pakistan.
