Mangalore: District Level Conference Discusses Child Education Rights

Mangalore, Sep 1: A district-level conference on child education rights law was held in association with District Education and Training Board and the ‘Sarva sikshana Abhiyana Mangalore’ in the city on Tuesday August 31 to solve most of the problems faced in schools.

DK district panchayat president Santhosh Kumar Bhandary inaugurated the programme and said that students shall be cared for by the teachers of the respective schools where they learn as it is one of the rights of the children. “Children must be physically, mentally, and emotionally free from abuse in schools”, he said.

 

MLA U T Khader presided over the function and said that current teachers have to preserve the  rights of children.

Fr Melvyn Pinto, teacher, St Aloysius College, said that lavish donations taken by schools shall be stopped and only development fees have to be taken. He said that this by shall be decided by the education department after discussion on the needs of the schools.

Sullia Sneha Primary School teacher Chandrashekhar Damble said that schools shall maintain standards and the teachers ask for parents’ qualification and bank balance before making their selection. “Many more teachers shall be recruited as there is lack of teachers in schools, especially government-aided schools”, he added.

He also gave an example of a school where students suffered due to lack of a maths teacher for the whole year.

Deputy director of public instruction Chame Gowda, Joseph, vice-president of the zilla panchayat Rajashree Hegde,and District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) principal Filomina Lobo were the guests present at the conference.
