Karkala: Pardana, folk songs of coast sung as agricultural activity takes pace

Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (MS)

Karkala, Jun 24: As the monsoon starts showering in the coastal districts, Pardana, folk songs sung by agricultural labourers, start filling the air in the paddy fields. In the taluk, the agriculturists have started planting the saplings.

Pardana songs are believed to be passed on from generation to generation and not written. It is a kind of oral literature that is sung dedicatedly by both men and women who are engaged in agricultural work. While the men sing ‘Ural’ while tilling the land, women sing Sandi, Kabite and Pardana while planting the saplings or removing the harvest.

These pictures are shot by Ram Ajekaru and Arun Bhat of the agricultural labourers engaged in paddy fieldwork in the limits of the taluk.

What I am writing here may seem cock and bull story, but it is not. I happened to attend one meeting and gathering of Rotary Club, Kinnigoli. In that meeting one elderly lady was honoured, who was well versed in Tulu Pardanas. I do not remember her name. It was said in the meeting, that a book containing most of her Pardanas had been published. She was given for her Pardanas, Karnataka Rajostava award, they said. Also, it was said there and the pamphlet distributed to us was containing news, that two foreigners made research on Pardanas and their Universities awarded them Doctorate degrees. This is unbelievable, but this is what was told in the meeting and it was mentioned in the pamphlet given to us.
