Kundapur, Sep 8: A family’s experiences in dealing with a mentally challenged child led to the establishment of Tallur Narayana Special School for Mentally Challenged in Tallur, near here, in 2008.
Ullas is the first born of Suresh Ganiga and his wife who reside at Tallur. He was born mentally retarded and today is twenty-seven years old. But despite his age, his mental ability is that of a small child.
There are several mentally retarded children like Ullas in many families who are oblivious to what’s going on in the world. Suresh and his family thought of establishing a special school for the mentally
challenged and thus, the Tallur Family Trust came into being. The Trust then set up the special school.
At the school, all functions are held in a humanitarian manner. There are many mentally challenged children at the school from all over the district. The family is committed to its work and doesn’t seek any
publicity for their mission.
Narayan Tallur was the patriarch of the family and an honest forest officer. His children pursued his mission of caring for the mentally challenged children after his demise. The school has been serving the
mentally challenged students since two and a half years, training them in every sphere of life.
