Mangaluru: ‘Bicycle lane unscientific, scent of corruption in project’ - AC Vinayaraj

Mangaluru, Jul 12: Corporator AC Vinayaraj, opposition leader at Mangaluru City Corporation, said that the proposed bicycle lane project under Smart City is unscientific and urged to make changes in the same.

Addressing the media here on Monday, July 12, he said, “A 12 km bicycle lane is planned in Mangaluru under Smart City project in two phases at different locations. Rs 8 crore has been released for the same and the routes have been identified. MLA Vedavyas Kamath is acting like a dictator and planning to earn commission through this unscientific project."

“Money is being spent without any plans. Mangaluru is a business centre in and around the three-kilometre radius of Hampankatta, unfortunately, in the name of development, several roads have been dug which is troubling shopkeepers in that region."

“If a bicycle lane has to be made, it has to be a dedicated one like the one in Bengaluru. According to the routes identified, the roads there are narrow and if a three-meter wide bicycle lane is constructed, then the existing roads will become narrower. There is no guarantee that vehicles will not enter the lane which will pose danger for cyclists.

“The roads in Mangaluru should be widened and underground drainage work also has to be completed. It is impossible to construct a bicycle lane on the existing road.

“The tender has been given to those who have no experience in the work. The person who has received the tender is a close aide of MLA Vedavyas Kamath and there is a scent of corruption in this project. Congress will not allow anyone to loot the taxpayers' money. We have written a letter to the chief secretary, directorate of urban land transport and MD of the Smart City project to withdraw the project and come up with a new plan looking at a feasible area and also asked that there be certain changes made in the plan,” he said.

Mangaloreans should start signature campaign to stop this Bicycle lane. First, make proper footpaths and then you go for bicycle lane.

Knowing our present Mangalore MLA , Mr Kamath you can never accuse him of corruption . No way ! He does not need that kind of money. Don't accuse for the sake of it. However, if you do not find things right, there are ways of going about it, protesting in the MCC council, preparing documents, estimates and the like. Use your resources effectively. Your Press Conferences are a laughing stock, it will get you nowhere. Do some honest field work where people will get up and notice. You had been in power all these years!!Had you widened a single road?? Now Mangalore has been dug up..Ok ,,but we will have to bear some pain for future gain... Be ready with your plans if any ... don't oppose for the sake of opposing.

Fully agree. While cycling you need fresh air,Mangala corniche is the best place for cycle tracks.Mangalore should have a MRTS (metro). This will solve many problems of commuting, traffic, pollution and parking.

Its strange to note that nobody monitors and give some valid technical expertise /knowhow about the works that are going on in and around Mangalore which leads to think the public that our tax payers money is being wasted by doing such unscientific works.

With petrol and diesel prices increasing, its better people use bycycles or electric bycycles to travel within city which is cheaper and sensible. Atleast ull reach home safely on the dedicated cylcle lanes.

Construct flyovers within the radius of 3-5kms,which will solve all traffic problems in Mangalore. Since the amount to be spent for this project is huge, do it phase by phase.

I think and so will many that this city needs more sidewalks ( FOOTPATHS) instead of bicycle lanes. I had commented earlier on this same issue but it was not published for some reason or the other.

Before thinking or planning to have bicycle lanes, the first plan you should have good sidewalks ( footpaths) for pedestrians to walk easily.

First make a two way road with proper drainage, footpath and parking. If you can accomplish all the above, then think of the luxury of bicycle lane. I don’t say it’s a bad idea to have one but on Mangalore roads I don’t think it’s possible.

AC Vinayaraj is right. First, widen the roads. Demolish all 50 years old building built on the road side without leaving sufficient setback. There is no footpath, from where you will bring space to ride a bicycle ?? Please plan before setting out to building. Granted, the money is not yours, but we citizens have slog and sweat to pay that tax no ? Stupid representatives elected by none other but ourselves.

Mr AC Vinayaraj you better go find out who made the proposal , Architect's simply don't design without knowing the context and its not simply designing because we want one but it's a constant effort of thought that goes into it . You have no right to say it's unscientific . You better develop our ward number 40 , we haven't seen any your work from the day after elections . Clean your house first and then talk about others

Talking about clean your house first, is there proper footpath in any of the city roads? How many people ride bicycles in mangalore. And architects will do the design if they get money. How will you implement design? Even the Mangala corniche was designed. Has it been implemented?
