Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jul 18: The incessant rains lashing the district over the past few days caused a massive landslide at Baikampady industrial area here on Sunday, July 18.

Fortunately, no injury or casualty was reported.

However, as a result of the landslide, a ready mix concrete industry is in danger of collapsing.

Also, Adishakthi interlock industry suffered losses due to the landslide.

Speaking to daijiworld, Gopal B V of Adishakthi interlock industry said, "We have lost several pieces of interlocks, cement bags and other materials. We lost materials worth Rs 15 lac due to the incident."

Local corporator and MCC officials visited the spot.

The torrential rains in the coastal region have caused widespread damage. Earlier in the day, a landslip along a railway track in Puttur forced stoppage of train service, and a couple of days back, a landslide at Kulshekar also disrupted rail services.

This is just the beginning.....there will be enormous price to pay in coming days for the relentless destruction of environment in the name of development. These are man made disasters due to which nature is paying back in its own way.

HAP hazard development leading to landslides can be seen in all hilly areas last few years in Karnataka incl coastal areas .& ... Coorg .. Hassan etc While trees .. cutting ..roads .. development of layouts .. sites are responsible ..especially fragile western ghats ... Even basic slopes not provided while certain hilly areas are developed We see vertical cutting leading to land slides .. Basic common sense not applied by developers .. be it govt or private .... Possibly to save some money slopes not provided alongwith tree cutting which holds the soil ..
