Abu Dhabi Firm to Phase Out Plastic Bags

Abu Dhabi, Sep 15 (IANS/WAM) The Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO) will phase out the use of plastic bags in its facilities, a company official said Wednesday.

According to Chief Executive Officer Ali Rashid Al-Jarwan, a multi-faceted strategy to replace all non-biodegradable plastic bags by the end of 2010 will be adopted.

"We are fully aware of the environmental hazards posed by non-biodegradable plastic bags. The alarming figures shown by studies about the consumption of plastic bags are causing concern not only to environmentalists but to all of us in various types of businesses and we have to do something about it," Al-Jarwan said.

He added that the move comes in line with the UAE government's decision to ban all non-biodegradable plastic bags in the country by Jan 1, 2013.

As long as the supermarkets provide the plastic bags, people will not take any interest in taking any other bags which are environmental friendly. First step should be taken by the Government to stop the supermarkets from providing the plastic bags. Not even by paying, cause people do not mind paying 30 fils for the plastic bag. Then only people will adapt to the system as there is no other alternative. 2013 is too far away. It should be implemented immediately.
