Saudis, Indian Detained Over Cable Theft

JEDDAH, Sep 17 (Arab News): Police have detained a number of Saudis and one Indian on suspicion of stealing electricity cables from a water sanitation station in Balad. The men in question were accused of pinching the cables so they could sell it on later.

The men were arrested after the water station’s security guards called police.

Police arrived at the scene where they conducted a search of the area and detained the men, who were then transferred to police custody.

“In the beginning the men denied the charges, although they admitted guilt after they were presented with some of the evidence,” said Jeddah police spokesman Col. Misfer Al-Juaid.

“They justified their act by telling investigators that the cables were old and decayed and useless to the water station.”

Al-Juaid said that they are in prison pending the return of the stolen materials.
