Udupi, Sep 17:
A large pothole on NH17 on which a motorist had put up a scarecrow was filled up by the members of Junior Chamber International (JCI), Kaup here on Friday September 17.

It may be recalled that an unidentified motorist had planted a scarecrow on the pothole as protest against the deplorable condition of the highway and the apathy of the authorities.

The cost of repairing the pothole, which came up to Rs 30,000, was borne by the JCI members who volunteered themselves for the task.

Kaup JCI president Praveen Kumar Gurme speaking to Daijiworld said that it was an attempt to alert the NH authorities on the plight of NH 17.

Praveen Kumar further informed that a mega protest against the highway authorities will be staged shortly, in which the public too will participate.

Kaup JCI former presidents and members took part in the voluntary service while Kaup police provided the security.

    Dear all,
Today I just returned from a trip Mangalore - Murudeshwar and back by driving my car.I feel that this was the worst mistake I ever made in my life.
The NH 17 is in a pathetic condition. I had to drive like a circus artist to avoid pot holes.
Then there are maniac Bus / Truck drivers who put the fear of GOD into you all along the highway.
There is absolutely no road for about 13-15 Kilometers starting somewhere near Bhatkal Check-post.

The best solution appears to me is - invite Sonia Gandhi to travel to Mangalore from Ankola.I can assure you that the NH 17 will be repaired within 24 hours as if by magic!!
    Cheers and Jai Ho

Please dont blame the government as they are very busy in very important tasks 'banning cow slaughter & release of criminals from jail'-Let them complete the priority task first. Roads, poverty, housing for poor, jobs for unemployed- these are not on their priority List.

Our honorable ministers are travelling in this road to the airport, are they deaf, dumb and blind. Indeed they are, because contractor's have stuffed then with money making them deaf, dumb and blind.Road authority in India is very poor, mismanaged and corrupt. We wish that the new government to come will take care of common people's necessities.

Shame on those department whose duty was to maintain the roads from the collected road tax. The department should reimburse the repair cost of Rs.30,000 to those noble souls from JCI Kaup for their timely action.
