Mangalore, Sep 21: ‘World Alzheimer's Day’ was marked by a rally at KMC Hospital in the city on Tuesday September 21.
Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia. This incurable, degenerative, and terminal disease was first described by German psychiatrist and neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1906 and is named after him.
Dr Kripa Alva, chairman, Mangalore Business School, said that in 2006 there were 26.6 million sufferers worldwide. “It is being predicted that Alzheimer's disease will affect 1 in 85 people globally by 2050. It usually surfaces in elderly people, and women should especially have themselves checked as Indian women tend to neglect their health issues”, added Dr Alva.
Retired Major General Raj Gopal, dean of KMC, flagged off the procession.
KMC students participated in the procession in large numbers holding placards and banners. The rally moved from KMC College to Town Hall and then back to the college.
Dr Olinda Pereira and Mangalore’s former mayor Judith Mascarenhas were the other guests present on the occasion.
