Mangalore: Solid Waste Mgt Programme at St Agnes College Inaugurated

Mangalore, Sep 25: Community awareness campaign on solid waste management was organized by the department of commerce of St Agnes College at the college auditorium here on Saturday September 25.

Inaugurating the programme, city commissioner Dr K N Vijaya Prakash said that great initiative brings about greatest results. The college has taken a great initiative in managing solid waste becoming a role model for other colleges in the region to follow suit.

Surprised over the fact that the city itself dumps 200 to 225 million tonnes of waste per day, he said that Mangaloreans are known to be cultured, responsive and pro-active and am sure that my dream to make the district clean and litter-free.

Presiding over the programme, principal in-charge Supriya said that there is a need for contemplation on how to reduce waste in the surroundings and also ways to plant saplings to increase greenery around. Students of the college will initiate planting of saplings at the premises thus contributing their share towards a green city. She also urged students to compulsorily use waste bins and reduce using plastic covers.

Skit and mime based on the theme solid waste management were staged by the students of the college.

Staff co-ordinator Dr Devi Prabha Alva welcomed the gathering. Sr Maria Kripa and Dr Manjayya Shetty were the other guests present on the occasion.

    Approx 9.6% of the earth is covered with forests. If use of plastics was not there, then, there would have been no forests left. Think about it.. The issue here is litter.
