Protect Yourself from Lightning Strikes Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges, or peaks. Never lie flat on the ground. ... Never shelter under an isolated tree. Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter. Immediately get out of and away from ponds, My house os below the tall Radio broadcadting tower in Bijay and many people advised me that there are very less chance for lightning to hit any houses in the visinity. Beacause the towers will absorb lighting or earthing effects

In fact lightning must not strike in the open field (unless it is a hill). It will strike generally tall buildings and trees. I have experienced this in my house in 1984 and all of us were safe except the all the house wiring was burnt and 3 coconut trees were killed and also all the things in the house were scattered everywhere. But none of the electrical equipment's were damaged...may be because of the fact that fuse carriers were thrown out and the wiring was burnt. Being a electrical engineer I can not find a reasonable answer for this. Theory says something else.

Mobile phones and telephones lines and even metalic plumbing pipes can be potential carrier for electricity generated during lighting . However there is no conclusive study to prove that. It is better not to touch mobile phones, metal pipes and telephone lines during lighting and thunder. During old days, people of Karavali region use to throw metal objects like sickle, knives outside their house during lighting perhaps a way of lighting arrestor.
