NATO crew member from Puttur recalls Afghanistan stint

Puttur, Aug 20 (IANS): Deepak Kumar U, a 35-year-old man who worked in the rescue fire fighting crew team of the US and NATO army base in Herat, Afghanistan, shared his experience of horror with the Taliban during his stint in the war-torn country.

"I am in touch with locals of Herat city who worked with me. There is a curfew kind of atmosphere in the entire city. People are not coming out of their houses," he told IANS.

Only the Kabul airport is operating and all the others are closed.

"When we were evacuated, there was no mad rush like it is happening in Kabul. Our base was handed over to the local government after evacuation," he says.

Deepak Kumar from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada worked at the Herat army base on the Iran border for six years.

"We worked with Portuguese and British nationals. Some have joined from Maharashtra and Kerala states also," he says.

"If everything went well I was planning to stay in Afghanistan for two more years," he says.

However, he returned on June 22 from Afghanistan with his colleagues Mithun Shetty, Shekar, Hyder and others.

"The military bases were established in the areas where terrorists were highly active. When I worked at a military base, rockets launched by the Taliban used to fall right inside the premises. The radar was used to identify it and give a signal before it fell. We used to run into the well-built bunkers. Until I was there, no casualty was reported due to rocket firing.

"Military personnel never shared any information with us, however, we used to observe their operations with curiosity," he said.

"Those who went to fight against the Taliban in fighter jets returned with dead bodies and injured soldiers. They were treated at the base hospitals," he adds.

Until the American army was present, the Taliban never wagged its tail. But, the Taliban was ready with modern ammunition to declare war, according to Deepak Kumar.

When America decided to withdraw its armed forces, Afghanistan locals who were in touch were scared. They used to say that the Taliban would occupy the whole country in one month after the withdrawal of American forces, this has come true, he explains.

When Americans left, they had trained the Afghanistan military. However, the army, about 3 lakh strong, could not defend against the 50-60,000 Taliban army. Afghans predicted this and the nature of Afghan people is really good, he says.

There were many Indians in the military system established by America and NATO countries. Most of them have returned after the withdrawal of American forces. All my friends have also returned to the country safely.

When the American army was present, the Taliban was pushed to remote villages. The local villagers in touch with the army used to be very scared to go back to their villages. Taliban took their fingerprints before allowing them inside villages. If anyone having links with the army was found, they would kill them. The villagers in touch with the military did not visit their places for years, he said.

Deepak Kumar found the job vacancy at an army base in Afghanistan, on the internet and attended the interview on Skype.

He then attended a medical exam in New Delhi and reached Kabul. He was given three days off once in five or six months and his travel expenses were taken care of.

"Initially I was scared. Since it was a military base where safety is ensured and many of my friends already worked, I chose to work," he added.

In any case one day or the other Talibanies would fight for their native Afghanistan. Why do the soldiers from America take care of them and how long. In any case these hardcores won't mend their ways unless they learn humanity and family concerns. Even though a few of them are well educated and still want to follow the devilish characters. We pray for their conversion to happen and they lead a peaceful life.

U forgot Hyder also came with him, where u want him to join. Remember these ppl went to work in that dangerous situation to look after their family back home. Not like some keralites who left with wives to die there by leaving behind old aged parents.

Watch ex kgb officer Yuri Bezmenov interview. How academia, intellectuals, media had been meticulously used trained to brain wash entire generation and which will seed the destruction of country for generation after generation. Rights activist, peta, feminist, black life matters all are outcome of these experiments. He says communist kill their own when their goal reached. Russia killed many top communist leaders, cuban cheguera killed by his own comrades, Bangladesh mujibrehman killed by their own comrades. Kgb killed many Indian communist also. Its like one Marxist communist killing another saying he his less communist than another communist. Now Just replace communist with jehadist.

As Deepak Kumar says, Afghanistan people are good natured, feeling very sad for their plight under most cruel Taliban. Taliban is notorious and cruel, it doesn't mean that they are bold and have guts, as Deepak Kumar says, as long as American soldiers were there, Taliban didn't wagged their tail. As Melwyn says in interview to Daijiworld, Afghanistan soldiers engaged to duty were afraid for cruel Taliban would attack their families. But saddest part is, despite their cruelty, apparent from news and their own innocent people trying to run away, None of their community countries, known for opposing Israel, not opposing Taliban nor giving asylum to terrorized Afghanistan people. It implies their tacit support to Taliban mindset, despite the fact that they too can't follow their rules!

Deepak Kumar, Your assessment from the ground is pretty much accurate.... Why Afghan military's collapsed in addition to US withdrawal there are other main reasons which you may not be aware of... 1.Afghans were majority of Pashtun tribe....all Taliban's are Pashtuns and there are more Pashtuns tribe in Pakistan than in Afghanistan....Imran Khan himself is a Pashtun settled in Pakistan's Punjab province... wherever they are located they have soft corner for Taliban's... 2. Taliban's were created, trained, and funded by Pakistan....all these 20 years Pakistan was secretly supporting them and publicly supporting Americans....Americans knew about this but since this was a land locked Country...they needed access to Afghanistan through Pakistan...so they could not be too tough with Pakis... 3.Afghan political leadership was totally corrupt....Karazai and Ghani's purpose of being in politics was to make wealth like Indian politicians....So soldiers never trusted them...when you don't trust your leadership ...you won't sacrifice your life to save their skin... 4.Karazai became Afghan President at 65...then married and made 3 children's...this was his only achievement along with Corruption and buying properties in Dubai and Europe... 5. I predicted before few years...day Americans leave, Taliban will take over Afghanistan that's exactly happened... 6. Its not US soldiers job to give their life, blood and sweat to prop up corrupt Afghan regime... 7. If Afghan Military don't have will power to fight terrorist Taliban...then they deserve to be ruled by Terrorist Taliban...nobody should shed their tears for them... ...Tak...Takk....
