Beltangady, Oct 4: Bhajans are the most effective medium to prove devotion towards the almighty, said music director of Kannada filmdom Hamsalekha.

He was speaking as a chied guest at the valedictory ceremony of the Bhajana Kammata held at Dharmastala here by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Bhajana Tarabeti Samiti on Sunday October 3. While music is the most easiest way to reach God, bhajan is the simpler form of vedic chants. In the earlier days deep penance was one of the ways to please God, whereas bhajan singing is the easiest way to seek divine blessings for such singing as great power, he said.

He announced his decision of participating in the next kammata voluntarily through introducing to the world, an instrument Kankanaka invented by him.

Presiding over the programme, dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade said that music has the power to attract the all living beings in the universe. Bhajan has been instrumental in wiping out caste differences in the rural areas, he noted.

He said that though to be born as human beings as superior, it is a blessing only when the man forgoes evil chracters such as greed, envy, selfishness and pride among others.

Mohandas Swamiji of Sridhama Manila blessed the occasion. Comedian Tennis Krishna and Hemavati V Heggade among others were present.

Mr Vijay Prabhu, I believe Hamsalekha was there to appreciate and encourage Bhajan culture in general public (not sadhus). He is a well known musician and his message was simple "While music is the most easiest way to reach God, bhajan is the simpler form of vedic chants". He meant the simpler form not the only form. Neither he nor people are interested in mon-bhrath or thapasya ("deep penance" as he mentioned). Bhudda tried and didn't reach nirvana by physical/sadhu practice of all sorts.

Billions of people including swamijis, gurus, daas, priests practice bhajans in one form or another which are simpler and easiest to their knowledge level. In other words, bhajan as to "seek divine blessings from the God" and penance as to "please the God".

Living in harmony with your neighbours, helping those who are in need, respecting elders, taking care of your aging parents, respecting the rights of others, having kindness, patience, sympathy and respect. These are much better ways of reaching God than Bhajans or prayers. Hope everyone will agree with me. I am not referring to any religion in particular and this is my opinion applicable to all humans.

    Vijay Prabhu.
I appreciate your bold comments on this sensitive subject and would like to add further to your wise comments.

Just being a Hindu, Christian or Muslim, by name, does not make one qualified to make blanket statements, pass judgements or advise the followers to take a particular path to reach God.

Having read the above article on Bhajans, I took time to read about Hinduism, and was surprised about the enormous depth of spiritual knowlege it posseses, which is not known to the vast majority of people at large.

In Hinduism, atma-jnana (self-realization) is the key to obtaining Moksha. The Hindu is one who practices one or more forms of Yoga - Bhakti, Karma, Jnana, Raja, knowing that God is unlimited and exists in many different forms, both personal and impersonal.

One of the misconceptions many non hindus have is that, there are many Gods in Hindu religion, but, as I understnd it is one God in different forms, which is also the belief of many Non Hindus.

If only those qualified on relgious matters talk about religious issues to the general public, a lot misconceptions and animosities about other religions are bound to disappear.

There are so many ways and methods to Reach God! Not only by Bhajans! In my opinion Mr. Hamselaka should know that there are so many Hindu religious 'sadhus'who keep 'silent' (mon bhrath in Hindi) and just sit in one position all the time! If he visits Banares or Varnasi Temple on the Ganges river or 'Sangam' where supposedly all the 3 holy river meets, he will witness them. They never sing bhajans or even speak a word and supposedly they reach 'Nirvana' which is the nearest thing to God, if I understand it right! So Mr. Hamsalekha please educate yourself futher on Hindu or any religion futher before you make any such blanket statement! Havce a great day!

I am extremely happy to see the excellent coverage of this Bhajana Kammata for the first time. I may be wrong but keeping with the traditional way of such things has never failed as far as Shri Shri Shri Virendra Heggade. He is the living God for mankind giving solace to millions of people visiting Dharmasthala. This is another feather in his cap after World Tulu Sammelana recently held at Ujire. I Pray to the Almighty Shree Manjunatheshwara to give him enough strength to guide the wayward people of whole universe with his vision for continuing with the traditional way of reaching the Almighty.

Devotional songs of every religion are very soothing and create the mind-body connection, mind-body healing and deep trance hypnosis to reach God.

There are several ways to reach God or communicate with God and Bhajans is one of the ways. Each religious community have their own ways of communicating with HIM. Have you ever tried to be in front of God in a temple totally silent, looking at the God and communicating with Him? Try it and you will understand. All I am saying here is Bhajans is not the only way.

People are free to Reach God any way they want, through, Bhajans, or going to Temple, Church or Mosque, but dont harm your neighbour and dont force your thoughts on your neighbour.

No Doubt. In Kaliyug only in Bajan we can reach God Almighty. In our School days we used sing Bajan in the evening before Dinner. No dinner without Bajan. Unfortunately now because of TV , no one sing Bajan at home.
