Bantwal: 32-year-old doctor Maizy Fernandes falls into pond, loses life

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Sep 15: A woman who came to a private farm in Adyanadka, Vittal in the taluk, fell into a pond located inside the farm at around 5.45 pm on Tuesday September 14. She was brought to a private hospital in Mangaluru after initially referring her to Vittal community health centre. The doctors upon examination found that she was no more.

The lady doctor who suffered serious injuries due to the accidental fall has been identified as Maizy Fernandes (32) from Mangaluru. It is said that she had visited the farm two days ago and ventured near the pond area all alone. As she did not return even after considerable time, a search was launched inside the pond and she was brought out from the depths of the water and hospitalised.

Vittal police inspector Nagaraj H E, led a team which conducted scrutiny of the spot. On the basis of a complaint filed by Trista Fernandes from Prashanth Nagar, Mangaluru, the police have registered a first investigation report and begun investigation. The complainant has said that this was an accidental fall and there is no suspicion of any foul play in this death.

It is said that Maizy, who was not a practising doctor, but had immense interest in agriculture, had visited the said farm a few days back too in order to undertake research in agriculture. She returned home for three days after which she returned to the farm and was staying here from September 12 onwards.

It is believed that the lady would have kept her clothes and footwear on the edge of the pond before going into the pond for fun. She drowned on this occasion. As she did not return for long, some students who were learning to swim, who had noticed that she was going towards the pond, searched for her inside the pond and found her.

This pond was built to attract tourists. Adventure sports are sometimes organised in this pond and senior officials of the government departments visit the farm and stay there for rest and recuperation. It is said that a boy had recently drowned in this pond.

It may be recalled, Maizy was one of the contestants at Miss Daijiworld beauty pageant held in 2016.

Heartfelt condolences to Dr. Maizy and her family. It really hit me as I heard the news on Wednesday as I was at the farm just a week before this incident as a volunteer. It's really sad to see people saying that this could be foul play, as living at the farm for a month, I do know how loving everyone at the farm is. Not only that, as we entered the farm, on day 1 itself we were told about water safety and to always follow buddy system (enter the pool with one other swimmer, only if both have passed the test). I think this is sad news to the family as well as the farm. May her soul rest in peace🙏

Yes it is most unfortunate Dr. Daizy got drowned in our Irrigation pond. Till 4.30 PM she was playing with our 8 year old grand daughter. Even now I do remember sparkle of her eyes. Unfortunatly she ignored basic water safty. Infact we have best people in CPR lead by my son Partha Varanashi. They kept pumping her heart til Fr. Mullerher. Their was some feeble pulse. It was last flicker. Kindly do not blame us. We have have done everything. She has enjoyed every moment of her stay. We too. We pray for the eternal peace of her soul.

Dear Anita Bai , catholic community is quite a small and shrinking community...loss of life of a young lady even though not our own family makes all of us concerned. We respect your privacy but at the same time request you to look at other angles of the incident since the incident happened in the absence of people so as to ensure this does not repeat with others. You cannot be sure short certain it was an accident unless there was an eye witness. I saw the location of the pond and it looks quite an isolated place.

A professional Doctor loosing life like this ?. Very very Tragic. May her soul RIP. Moreover, there is no proper clarity. How she fell ? Does she knows swimming ? How she got injured ?. Why she gone alone ?. Why nobody witnessed ? . All questions without Answers.

I have no other words but to say RIP Dr. Maizy Fernandes. But some readers should refrain and avoid making such comments without knowing the facts. Even though I don't know her or anybody but such comments will affect the sentiments of the deceased family.

It was shocking watching this on TV this early morning in the headlines, immediately switched to Daiji to see this. Had met her just about a month back, really unfortunate to see this. This pond as far as I have known is a man made one and for any water body for that matter is always slippery around due to water presence always, maybe she slipped and hit her head. Only a detailed PM will shed more light, what's saddening is we lost a young life full of dreams and enthusiasm. RIP Maizy.

"It is believed that the lady would have kept her clothes and footwear on the edge of the pond before going into the pond for fun. She drowned on this occasion." She did know swimming and why would go alone near the pond or step into the pond when no expert swimmer was around. Post mortem report will determine the cause of death. So sad R.I.P.

" before going into the pond for fun. She drowned on this occasion." …. "The lady doctor who suffered serious injuries due to the accidental fall ".... if she has gone into the pond for fun and then drowned, how there will be serious injuries...? the report is contradictory and does not evoke trust...
