New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS) India will align its copyright regulations with international norms to curb rising piracy and violations of intellectual property rights.

"The Copyright Amendment Bill 2010 contains better provisions to deal with technology issues by extending protection of copyright material in India over digital networks related to literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, films and sound recordings," said Amit Khare, joint secretary in the ministry of Human Resource Development, Friday.

He said the amendments would bring India's copyright laws in line with international standards in Internet and digital technology.

The amendment bill, which has already been introduced in the upper house of parliament, seeks to provide stringent punishment for violations of copyrights, Khare said at an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Khare launched a web portal of Anti-Piracy Coordination Cell, which will function as a centralised agency to coordinate the efforts taken by the government and the industry to curb piracy.

The cell will assist in further strengthening the fight against piracy and in fulfilling India's commitment to ensure "zero tolerance" to piracy.
