Engineering student makes 13-minute video, ends life blaming education system

Hassan, Oct 26 (IANS): An engineering student has ended his life after making an appeal to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Vice-Chancellors of universities to change the existing education system in Karnataka's Hassan district.

The student has been identified as Hemanth Gowda (20), a resident of Arsikere town. The incident took place on Monday night and the police recovered the video on Tuesday.

In the video of 13 minutes and 21 seconds, Gowda asks the Chief Minister, Vice-Chancellors and prominent leaders of all parties to overhaul the present education system. He says the present education system is of no use.

He also appealed that his video should be uploaded on news channels, social media platforms. He had also requested to donate his body organs. Hemanth Gowda requested that his final rites should take place in the presence of Chief Minister, Education Minister and religious seers.

The youth thanked his female friend in the video and asked her to take part in his final rites. He also apologised to his parents.

Gowda hanged himself at his hostel facility. The police are investigating the case.

The increasing fees structure is adding to the woes of parents and children. A real tragedy that the young man had to take the extreme step. Appealing to politicians and chancellors may not help in alleviating the problem.

I wish to specify that pay more emphasis on skill development rather than just practicals and reading from the books. Let the colleges become a temple of learning and refining your skill sets and let it be research based learning right from the second year. Today with the internet we have access to immense knowledge. Deeply saddend by this incident. I too am an engineer but would refuse to give up. I say this to all budding engineers "You may see me struggle, but you'll never see me quit".

If he lived, he could have fought to correct the system. Dead people cannot fight. I don't think his committing suicide would change the system.

It is very sad. A budding young man decided to end his life, just because he could not cope up with educational system. Learning is what we need to do on our own and professors are there just to give basic help. Go to any international universities, the lecture is given by the professor for 200-1000 students at a time with the help of presentation, in a theater type setup. It is up to the student to make sense of those lectures, use reference material and self study. I have gone through exactly similar way of learning as what this kid gone through, and it never hampered by growth. In fact, I had better understanding of the subject than many who had international education exposure. Yes, I need to thank St. Aloysius for that. Taking one's life is nothing but escaping from reality in the worst possible way.

Suicide is never a solution for any problem. It is just passing one's pain to others left behind. God bless his soul. May god give strength to his parents. I feel extremely sad for them.

Very sad to know the present situation in place like India which is a reasonably good place for a decent Education System. I am sure all of you agree to the submissions made so far in this column of ours by our Well Educated and Experienced counterparts. I made a note of almost every submission. However, I am broadly in agreement with one of our friend, Mr Jossy Tauro of Mangalore. I grately appreciate his good evaluated point of view, not to say that others' point of view and valid opinion is not that good. Sincerely hope and pray that the Sacrifice now made by our departed brother, Hemanth Gawda (20) on this so called defective system will find a plausible a Better solution very soon by the Indian Authorities who are at the helm of our Education System. Thank you all dear friends for your very considered views and opinions. !!!

I am an engineering student too. College is depressing. Imagine listening to outdated and non-practical lectures for the entire day. And then we have to prepare by ourselves to be employable. No human should have to suffer this sort of boredom for 9 hours a day being completely undproductive.

Good point. The entire notion of lectures is questionable. If a survey is taken, we will know that the the students do not absorb even TWO % of the lectures. This lecturing was created to keep the teachers employed. Students will learn more if there are small study groups - by discussing the matter and exchanging thoughts/ideas. But the universities and the Governments do not get it.

Very sad. My son too had done engineering in a highly reputed college in Mangalore. The faculty, though most are PhDs, have no work experience, only book knowledge and absolutely no idea of how the industry has progressed. To make matters worse with COVID, they wanted to tick the boxes that so many hours were taught with absolutely no matter being delivered. The government must make it mandatory that ALL lectureres especially from the engineering stream need to have credible work experience so that they can deliver knowledged based education, not mutter some gibberish. Having degrees is pointless if the student does not benefit.

He is right as far as education system is concerned which doesn't give opportunity to excel creatively but creates uniform robots to fit in job market. Instead of continuing in the system he could have chosen to dropout and pursue some other branches that are of his dream. Sadly he didn't see more doors opening while just one closing.

Sad to see his life gone. In India no value for the education or educated people. We can see educated officers or other people need to work under our few uneducated political leaders. You willnotget jobunless there isbribe or influence. That's why we can see many educated people go foreign countries and work in smaller jobs. Many our educated doctors, engineers or scientists going abroad for better future. No scope in India for them. In school children's carried many KGs books on their shoulders but out of that may be 10%only become usefull in their carrier.

God only knows what was his status when he was hanged himself but surely it wasn't and is not an option to end life. Indeed it is true that life is not easy, everyone in their life struggle. Though Ambani, Adani billionaire, they didn't become success overnight, they worked hard and still. So please just live normal and any problem comes stand still and face it, every problem has a solution.

That's true.. Our system is terrible.. People who byheart everything blindly and score in exams get placed and people who are actually good don't get good jobs.. If a candidate has 80% marks in every exam and just 50% in puc that candidate is not selected no matter how well they do in interviews.... We have just become bookworms with no skills. Just byheart everything and write exams. . Worthless people are given jobs because of influence and so on So sad that a student had to end his life to bring this issue at limelight..
