PM Modi meets Pope Francis, extends invitation to visit India

New Delhi/Rome, Oct 30 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Pope Francis on Saturday at the Vatican and invited the head of the Catholic Church to visit India.

Taking to Twitter after his first-ever meeting with the Pope, Modi said: "Had a very warm meeting with Pope Francis. I had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him and also invited him to visit India."

According to officials, the meeting which was initially scheduled for only 20 minutes, continued for an hour during which they discussed a wide range of topics, including the fight against climate change and removing poverty.

The last Papal visit to India took place in 1999 when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister.

It was the Pope John Paul II who had come to India then.

Modi is on a three day visit to Italy to attend the G20 Summit in Rome from where he will proceed to Glasgow for the UN COP26.

It is funny that people think the meeting is for Goa Election. BJP/Modi won Goa many times even without meeting the Pope. He was on official visit to Rome and had the opportunity to meet the Pope. Last time it was Shri Vajpayeeji who met the Pope. Both invited them to India so that our Christian citizens get happy. As far as the local issues are concerned, everyone plays politics including Christian groups. If you are an ordinary Christian who has not involved in any unethical activities, you will not face issues. After all, we are from the same tree (DNA), it is just that your ancestors have branched out for various reasons. Chill, do not reduce this important meeting to an election. Both Modi and Pope are bigger than that.

BJP fundamentals are there to expand Hindutva and their grip over the minorities through RSS ideology thats why so many restrictions and controls are being introduced or more are expected in due course. Pope is very important figure to the whole world. Look at many middle eastern countries invited Pope and even many trying to change thier country approach to secularism for betterment of every humans. Whereas India recent developments on persecution on Christians is totally unacceptable even though Christians provide best services to India in all sectors . Despite of such honourable service handful of fanatics continued to harass Christians which is sad. Hope Modis meeting with Pope will provide some light on his way of thinking on Christians. When govt authorities are too focused on religion then whole country goes opposite directions because India is nation of diversity and multiculturalism. Cant divide people based on religion lines. Govt should stay neutral than affiliated with any religious organizations. Pope has nothing to lose. It is Modi went to meet him and it was Modi govt refuse to invite Pope.in thr past. It is better Pope visit India to show the world that India is a diverse nation.

In In Karnataka Christian organizations, churches and their activities are under the scanner of BJP govertments agenda New restrictions and undue controles are in the implimentation process. Informatiin on Conversions for the last 25 years and do you think Modiji is not aware of that ? First remove their suspicious watch dog on Christian organizations then try to please head of Roman Catholic Head his holiness Pope Francis. Modi is there to take part in G20 summit and not to represent Indian catholics welfare and and any grievances of minorities. True colours are hidden deep inside!

Now, proceed and spread your pearl of wisdom. Well, 'the hiding' all Congress supporters did since May 2014 only to come out and watch our nation going back to the economical state of 1947 and much before that. You keep supporting the greedy fox in a sheep's attire who wept in-front of citizens of India that he sacrificed family (ghar-parivaar) that he actually never had, for the nation. Even if I do retort, it would be in humor, never with an intention to hurt. It is no secret that some of you don't like voicing my opinion here. Forcing your own view point..... Not willing to see stark reality and the writing on the wall, clutching to straws, hoping against hope. And you call me a frog in the well... Well then what are you? Eel in slush?? What is the point of inviting the Pope to India just because the last time the previous Pope visited India during AB Vajpayee ji's rule? ....there is a huge difference between AB Vajpayee ji and Modi..... The latter can never be a Statesman like Vajpayee, no matter, how many times he circles the globe, in his new planes...Modi will always be only a politician and a politician's invitation is fraught with opportunism to boost his follower ratings.......Secondly, in present scenario of the country, if Pope comes to India and a few non -Christians come to see him in the maidan, your right wing organisations will immediately claim forced conversions.... We don't want anymore drama from Chaddis...better if Pope stays in Rome and speaks to indian catholics from there itself.

Diana I realy liked your comment in this forum. One of the best. God made Modi to meet the feet of his most holiness Pope Francis. Even though same man Modi denied to invite Pope to India and look at now this same man hugs Pope with his both hands so tight and invite Pope to india. Dont you think Jesus is so loving and merciful on all of us even though we are arrogant and ignorant with his kindness and love. God continues to show wisdom to all of us to do good and walk in his path.

But Jeevan, you never negated them being accused of conversion, despite the fact that the percentage of their population never increased from what it was from the time India got freedom. You didn't any time opposed the idea of their institutions being inspected for missionary activities. Well, Modi supporters need not be different than their leader. I'm sure Christians in India will survive and continue to the nation's development despite of the double standards.
