Kerala Catholics elated as Modi invites Pope to India

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 30 (IANS): As Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday invited Pope Francis to visit India, Catholics in Kerala are elated, said Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church.

Following their meeting earlier in the day at the Vatican, Modi announced that he "had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him and also invited him to visit India".

This was the first in-person meeting between the two.

In response, the Cardinal said: "We are all deeply excited and happy that from the news what we hear in the media that Modiji has invited Pope to visit India. Christians in general and Catholics in particular have been waiting for the Pope to arrive in India and of course to Kerala. Now that the invite has been extended, we can be rest assured that it will happen."

Christians in Kerala constitute around 19 per cent of the state's 33 million population.

The three Catholic churches account for 50 per cent of the Christians in the state.

Cleemis further said that the invite is only the first step before numerous procedures before the Pope can actually visit the country.

"We will all wait for things to happen and once the visit is officially cleared, numerous things have to fall in place and each and every aspect will have to be planned in detail."

During their meeting in 2014 soon after Modi assumed office, Cleemis gave a memorandum stating that the Union Government should extend an invite to the Pope to visit India.

The last papal visit to India was a very brief one which took place in 1999 and the only time that a Pope visited Kerala was way back in 1986 to beatify Sister Alphonsa and Kuriakose Elias Chavara popularly known as Chavara Achen.

Earlier on Saturday, state BJP president K. Surendran called on Cardinal Cleemis, at the same time when Modi called on the Pope at the Vatican.

Calling the meeting "historic", Surendran said: "This will send out a strong message about how a country like India looks upon various religious leaders. Kerala as all knows has a very large Christian population and the visit will be helpful in all aspects."

Venkatesh, Mangalore, Oh MG....from which cave in Mangalore you are come out to put these kind of statements in this 21st century. Learn and read some history of events for past one century and then see how many Nations hosted various religious leaders in their respective countries. You are trying to say that this one visit and a warm hug with Holy Father Pope Francis will open the gates of heaven to Christians in India. Just look at what the present Karnataka Government is upto in treating Christians . Anyway actions in coming days against christians will speak louder than words till then keep beating your famous drums. By the way please do know that Vatican is a independent State within the State of Italy and Pope is Head of the State.

Whatever politics or diplomacy may be behind this.. But Respecting another religious leader is the something best suit for India & Religious tolerance... You can object this or argue about this.. But can you expect any christian country call another religious leader to their country , Or any Muslim country call other religious leaders to their country & honour them ???? Only In India it can happen.... Hindus go and settle everywhere in the world.. And follow all the rules in the respective country .. But, you can't expect this with others...

Mr Venkatesh, Did you forget the grand welcome, highest respect and honour from UAE to Pope Francis during his visit to Abu Dhabi in Feb 2019. I have seen how well they organized it, arranged thousands of buses from other Emirates to Abu Dhabi at govt. cost. Everything was organized so beautifully and respectfully.

Venkatesh, please be informed, that the Indian PM went uninvited to ONLY ONE country in the world. All other countries reciprocated the political invite/welcome. Please don't be under the impression that Modi went invading and supported building a temple in UAE or Howdy Modi happened without the invite from his Big Brother. Or that India is hosting world leaders at BJP's personal expenditure. It's mine and yours tax that is spent for this step, despite the high cost of living the current government has subject us to.

Modi being fully aware of Pope’s ill health Modi extended a pressing invitation to pope to visit india. As if he is interested in his presence in india. If just this unconfirmed news and theatrics has created so much interest among Christians in Kerala then what more he needs.

Hello... you guys need not be excited. The invitation might be valid till he is inside the territory of Italy. The same man opposed the visit before and the same man ordered raids on your institutions alleging you guys of conversion. Just watch the fun of the man pointing fingers at one Italian in India and hugging another one in Italy !
