Udupi, Nov 11: “Accidents can be prevented when people on the roads follow rules without fail,” said deputy commissioner (DC) Kurma Rao. He was speaking after presiding over a road safety committee meeting held at district panchayat auditorium on Wednesday November 10.

“Wearing seat belts and helmets will prevent accidents,” he said.

He asked the national highway authorities to convert the 34 black spots as safe. “The regional transport authority and the police should inspect the spots once again and submit a detailed report about the actions that need to be taken. Warning sign boards should be erected on national highways and necessary measures should be taken. The police department should train one teacher each from all the high schools and pre university colleges within the next ten days to create awareness among children.

“The departments in charge of road constructions should include all the safety measures when the work is in progress,” he said.

“Leaving behind construction material and debris even after completing the work causes accidents. Those should be cleared,” said SP Vishnuvardhan. “The police department has registered 48,000 cases of violations and collected fines of Rs 2.26 crore from January 2021 to September, 2021,” he added.

The deputy commissioner directed to issue a notice asking for the cause to NH 66 officers who did not turn up for the meeting.

RTO Gangadhar and various other department officials were present.
