Raichur: Shobha to Tackle Coal Shortage, Mafia Role in Coal Supply

Daijiworld Media Network – Raichur (SP)

Raichur, Nov 11: State energy minister, Shobha Karandlaje, noted that a judicial inquiry committee headed by retired judge of the state High Court, Justice Mohan Kumar, has been looking into the aspect of involvement of coal mafia in the supply of coal to thermal power plants in the state.

She was speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday November 10 after visiting Raichur Thermal Power Plant here. “The committee has been given time till December 31 to submit its report. There is a suspicion that mafia is involved with the supply of washed coal to Raichur Thermal Plant and huge amount has been misappropriated. If the report proves the role of the mafia, we will review the necessity to get washed coal to RTPS. As the issue of purchase of transformers has also been given additionally to the said committee, we cannot deny the possibility of giving further extension to it, she said

Minister said, In the past, it was thought that thorough renovation of the first and second units of RTPS is necessary, as they are old. However, experts have now opined that renovation is not needed now. Hence, we will now take steps to improve efficiency of all the units here,” she added.

She also said that she would be visiting New Delhi on November 15 to impress upon the union government the need to augment coal supply to the state, as new thermal power projects in the state are coal-starved. She noted that several proposed projects that were envisaged, have been hit because of the fact that there is no guarantee about coal and gas supply. “Unless these issues are sorted out, the environment and forests department will not give clearance to new projects,” she explained. She said that the government’s proposed thermal power projects in Chattisgarh, Yadlapur and Jevargi are awaiting a concrete plan for supply of coal. At the same time, gas connection to the proposed gas-based power generation plants in Tadadi and Bidadi have not yet been established. As regards Udupi Power Corporation Ltd, the second unit is ready for commissioning, but we are awaiting clearance from the union environment and forests ministry, as 30 kms of power supply line of this unit will pass through the Western Ghats, she explained.

She hoped that the eighth unit of RTPS will begin commercial production on January 26, 2011, as planned. She stated that the vibration problem found in the first unit of Bellary thermal power plant has been solved, and that it will start power generation within two days. “By February next, the second unit of Bellary thermal power plant will start generating power,” she added. She said the government is planning to enter into contract for coal supply from Indonesia to meet the shortfall in coal supply faced by the thermal power units of the state.

Coal is not produced in Karanataka, either it has to come from North india or next option is Imports.
Karnataka Needs a large amount coal to keep our thermal plants running and this needs long planning of coal procurement.
AP and tamilnadu states too use a lrage quantity of caol for their thermal plants and have been planning their entire reuirements well in time.
We have also seen in recent months Coal prices have ped drastically and it wonders nhow Karanataka State is facing shortage of coal in this secinario ?
The need has come to our State enterpsies in Power Industry to go for professional management and hand over the same to any Private sector immedaitly and free that sector from beurecratic clutches who cannot perform in todays compititive era.
Udupi Power company has already shown in spite of all odss from vested interests, were able to commence their production on first stage and all set for the 2nd phase are also procuring coal for their plant.
government should atleast consider to give their plants to this private corporation on lease basis for 10 to 15 years, wherein consumers will be benifittted with uniterupted power supply with atleast 10% lesser tarrif than present rate of Escoms.
Gujrat has already proved this in their State, where the word LOAD SHEDDING has been removed from their dictionary.

    The perpetually pleasant and jovial
Minister Shobha is in a depressed
mood because of the coal issue.
    When the details are totally
exposed, she may get into a deeper
    mental depression. Karnataka has
    the greatest misfortune with mining
business whether it is iron ore
    or coal business.

We must observe two things in this issue. First one, how the new minister came to know in a short time this illegal issue or supply of low quality coal? Second question why she didn’t protected all the documents before publishing the conspiracy?
If we think low quality of coal supply either a drama or the authority who suppose to check it is culprit and they must put in custody and all the documents should hand over to court till proper investigation is done.
We are Indians need proper information and right things to be done in right way. WE want justice to the suffering and who really got cheated. Ministers must have some thinking power and must do their job in right way to save India not the image or their political party.

Mafia is within Shobakka. Check your Energy Dept including the history of past Ministers & Secretaries. Can any of the Ministers or officials inform the people that our generation capacity is insufficient. We do have sufficient capacity but badly managed. When the coal is not available and we do not have coal mines in the State why then more and more coal plants are built. The only reason is that the large contracts in such plants provide for personal gains throughout its life. Even the cheapest source of hydroelectric is not properly exploited nor maintained. Bharat Lala Meena opening admitted this. The use of CFL will save upto 60% energy. Go for it in a big way and subsidize the bulbs so that people afford it. Australia is saving 45% and is selling their coal to other countries. Somebody will have to stop the financial embezzlement in power sector first if we are to achieve energy security. KPC never had a clean performance record. IPPs like UPCL are created to feed corrupt politicians and officials and are granted undue favors in the name of power shortage. The cost of UPCL power is more expensive than Dhabol gas based power plant. There was no purpose at all for it be located in the otherwise ecologically sensitive zone.

Talk is always cheap. How can Shobha or anybody check coal mafia, when Reddys who were responsible for her loss ministership still continue their great and ``legitimate" mining activities as per the recent statement of her boss Yeddy.

We recently saw the pictures of workers who are engaged in the errection of power lines in the same region? How this work is being done if the approvals have not been received from the environment ministry?
