Udupi, Nov 17: Vehicular traffic in the city has been increasing every day. Because of the lack of a proper signal lights system, people are facing a lot of traffic issues. During the weekends, vehicle drivers are forced to set aside additional time to wait for their turn. Their predicament is set to end soon as the haphazard traffic movements are expected to become a thing of the past.
People have been, demanding for a signal system for a long time. Currently, a modern signal lights system has been installed at the Tiger Circle Manipal and now it is on an experimental run. Within a couple of days, this system will become fully functional.
Signal lights will be installed in 12 important junctions in the city. In tune with the economic bid, the agency has to remit s 20, 000 per junction to the municipality per month. Annually the municipality will get a revenue of Rs 28.8 lac every year from these 12 junctions. Municipal officials explained that if any lacunae or complaints are received in the signal lights maintenance, the contract with the agency can be cancelled.
The signal poles will have televised displays which will beam awareness about road safety, health etc when the vehicles have stopped, apart from commercial ads. The agencies will depend on the revenue from these advertisements to meet the money they have to pay to the municipality.
Signal lights will be installed at Kalsanka Junction, Old Diana Circle, Jodukatte Junction, Bannanje Narayana Guru Mandir Junction, Shiribeedu Junction, Karavali Junction, Ambagilu Junction, Tiger Circle Junction in front of MGM College at Kunjibettu and MIT Junction.
This will be a remotely managed integrated traffic update display system and it is being implemented in the city for the first time. The district administration, municipality, police department, regional transport office and local MLAs who met, have finalised the plan. The signal lights will be installed in phases in the coming days.
