Mangaluru, Nov 20: Various major drains that pass through different parts of the city are causing artificial floods during the rainy season. Artificial flood is a certainty whenever the city receives an hour of good rainfall. The water that overflows from the drains flows down the areas located on a lower gradient. To avoid this from happening, Mangaluru city corporation (MCC) has planned to build a protective wall to block water from flowing out of the major drains.

Many main drains which pass through low lying areas are dreaded for their artificial flooding. Often because of heavy water flow, the sides of the drains give way. To stop these things, it is proposed to build a strong protective wall for the drains to stop excess water from flowing out and to avoid flooding.

The plan is still in the preliminary stages. As per the plan, protective walls are proposed to be built wherever necessary at a cost of Rs 65 crore. Currently plans have been drawn up for an outlay of Rs 35 crore. The major drains will be streamlined by bringing additional grant of Rs 30 crore, said MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, who wants to make people living in low lying areas to have sound sleep during the monsoon season. The corporation which often gets hauled over the coal for its inability to control artificial floods, wants to do something to stop it.

Areas where the flood threats are more include Kottara Chowki, Malemar, Kudoli, Alake, Kodialguthu, Pattumudi Kodialbail, Jappinamogaru, Bejai Anegundi and Pandeshwar. These are low lying areas with low level major drains. Protective walls, if built, can stop the flooding in these areas.
