Bengaluru: High-pitched BJP-Congress battle over anti-conversion bill likely in winter session

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Dec 12: With just a day left for the start of winter session of assembly in Belagavi, there is much chaos in political circles with regard to the contentious anti-religious conversion bill.

BJP MLAs are pressuring the chief minister to present the bill in the winter session itself for approval. Sources say that the government is mulling submitting the bill before the committee formed to study and verify the proposed bill and present the same in the winter session.

However, the Congress has clearly stated that it will oppose the bill vehemently. KPCC president D K Shivakumar has said that the Congress will oppose the bill if it targets any community, warning the state government to not indulge in any 'misadventures' that may 'hurt the sentiments of any community'.

The committee meeting will take place next week under the leadership of law minister J C Madhuswamy. Once it is approved by the committee it will be moved in the cabinet meeting and tabled in the assembly.

In the midst of all this, it is learnt that BJP member Tulasi Muniraju Gowda has decided to propose a bill privately for prohibiting religious conversion.

The draft of the bill has been prepared by the home department after studying the religious conversion prohibition act that is in force in some states.

It is said that law minister Madhuswamy is hesitatant about implementing the bill in haste. The anti-religious conversion bill that is implemented by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh governments has already been questioned in the court. Therefore, Madhuswamy is approaching this issue cautiously.

It is gathered that in the draft prepared by the home department, proposal has been made to enforce minimum one year to maximum 10 years of imprisonment for enticing Dalits and backward communities in the name of marriage.

Conversion to any religion is allowed in the Constitution under freedom of religion. Constitution is the supreme law of the nation and any laws passed by the State contradicting constitution is null and void. Converting to any religion needs mental preparation. It is not as easy as changing the dress. Christians in the US are converting to Hare Krishna Panth-a Hindu religious sect. but no one restricting them because it is allowed in the Constitution. Seventy percent Hindu population need not worry about 2% Christians converting them. If you are steadfast believer in your religion, you may not convert to other religion. Why politicians are bothered about this issue unless their intention is to polarizing gullible Hindu votes by playing with their religious emotions. Majority Hindus are fair minded with respect for other religions, otherwise Indians might not live side by side for thousands of years with tranquility and tolerance. This law if passed should be challenged in Supreme court. India follows Common Law, not Sharia type of law.

The government of the day is supposed to take care of basic requirements of the citizens of the country whereas the present govt. Is least bothered to look into the problems of people who are facing unemployment and there are people who can't even have two meals a day. Senior citizens are burdened with heavy taxes who can't enjoy their own hard earned money where they need to pay 18percent gst on the mediclaim and deposits. End of the day one has to go to bed giving thanks to the Creator irrespective of any religion if he is a human being. But in this country all vote bank tricks are playing the cards

Its for the Govt of Europe of Middle east or where ever to decide who they can have in their Country. Moreover churches are being sold off or rented to Businessmen to convert it to Malls , or food courts. Rich Indians are even buying the church premises, so why will the Govt stop them when they contribute to economy. So these moves have the approval of the Govt . Maintaining a church is proving to be very expensive. To visit a church , I have to pay vehicle fuel, road tolls, parking charges. Then again church entrance fees and if you use the rest room , additional fees. So there are many hidden costs. The burden is parted over to the parishers who have now stopped visiting churches and do it from home . Some have even stopped this.

The double engine govt must first understand why the people choose different faith...., Definition of forced conversion must be analyzed from the victims perspective.... what are the circumstances which force them to convert... if the Manuvadi principles cause the victim feel second class/left out/hurting their ego in public etc., then let the Govt address the discriminatory issues within the Hinduism/Hindutva followers..., I can very well understand the isolated practices (i still remember, in good olden days the upper class people used to give water on a coconut shell, while thankful/grateful to them, there are many this is just a sample), thanks to good education imparted at missionary school which empowered me to be professional. The upper class don't want to see lower strata of the society getting good education & economic empowerment...., if christian institutions engage in conversion then half of ex students who got education/medical treatment etc., would have been got them self converted by then.., Can one Upper class Seer carry in his own bare hand the laprosy ridden patient/child from the street gutter to treat & rehabilitate ( like Mother theresa)...,, there is one more such Christian run social organization near Udupi (which rehabilitate the mentally challenged/sick beggars on the street), to conclude time for Hindu's to consider themselves equally..,

The PEW research does study on religion throughout the world. Study the research about religiuous affiliation of europeans and the Americans, what it was some three decades ago and what it is now. The traditional christian faith is weakening in favour of atheism. Draw your own conclusions then.

it doesn't say christian faith is weakening & it says da population of Christian remains dominant among all faiths & religions. Christian population is dominant becoz of da spiritually pure guru Jesus Christ da Living Holy One. da church = v da people was built by Jesus Christ. no lightening nor tempests nor thunders nor humans cowardliness shall not destroy till Jesus comes in 2nd time. concerning 2 atheism: during da time of Jesus on earth & b4 Jesus on earth atheists were there. athiesmis not a new thing. in Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists & in Sikhs atheists r there. 2 prove atheists r there India b.c., I quote a verse from holy bible, read psalm 14:1.
