Mangalore, Nov 27: Local MLA, N Yogish Bhat, has informed that a proposal for the opening of a government engineering college in the city has got in-principle nod of the higher education minister, Dr V S Acharya.

He said that this engineering college will enable interested candidates from financially backward families to get education, as government polytechnic and NITK Suratkal are the only other government-run technical education institutions in the district. The new college is proposed to be opened in the premises of the government polytechnic at Kadri. The college will start running courses in civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics besides chemical engineering from the next academic year, Bhat explained in a release.

At present, facilities like 6,200 square metres administrative building and classes, 6,500 sq metres laboratories and well-equipped workshops are available. Three hostels where 250 students can reside, also exist.  Even teaching staff with experience and educational qualification, are available, he informed.

The MLA said that the effort to open this new engineering college is an initiative towards enabling poor and backward students to get education at minimum cost. He added that this college will prove to be a boon for the students from the city and surrounding rural areas.
