Belagavi: Confusion on anti-conversion bill - Cabinet may take stand

Daijiworld Media Network - Belagavi (SP)

Belagavi, Dec 17: There is an air of confusion within the government circles in the matter of the timing of the introduction of the proposed anti-religious conversion bill in the assembly. As the party leaders hold different views on the issue, the air of uncertainty is yet to settle down.

Some of the BJP legislators are insistent that the bill should be moved in the current session itself. Some others feel that it would be better if the bill is tabled only after holding detailed discussions and examining all the issues.

The home department is preparing to move the bill. A clear picture might emerge at the cabinet meeting being held on December 20.

Reportedly, the legislators who have been with the BJP since long and those who have come from the Sangh Parivar background want the bill to be passed at the Belagavi session itself. The home ministry has prepared a draft copy and consulted the law department. But law minister J C Madhuswamy, is said to be hesitant to move the bill without exhaustive scrutiny.

It is said that even if the bill is moved, it might be introduced in the assembly alone for now. The BJP is worried about the bill facing reverses in the legislative council if the bill is moved in the current session, as the Congress and the JD(S) are opposed to the bill, and the BJP does not have a clear majority in the council now.

The bill reportedly makes forcible conversion a punishable offense under Article 26 of the Indian Constitution. Any person desirous of religious conversion has to apply for the same to the deputy commissioner, who is the competent authority, two months in advance. He will have the liberty to withdraw the application. The fact of the religious conversion process cannot be kept a secret to protect the right to privacy of the individual. No one can be forced to undertake the conversion process. Those who are found to be forcibly converting the people or instigating them to do so can be arrested.

Karnataka is getting anarcho-tyranny under the BJP government. BJP is passing vigilantism laws which gives free reign to vigilantes to tyrannize citizens belonging to minority communities.

They are not serious but they are mocking at the situation where law abiding christian citizens of Karnataka are at mercy of these useless ministers. None of the ministers talk what law should be implimented if someone forces a individual to say 'JAI SHREE RAM'

Dear soc called law makers, where is the law to punish the goondas who enter churches and vandalise before even knowing what is happening in the church.

When there is not a single case of forcible conversion in Karnataka, what is the need to introduce anti-conversion bill? It looks like the only intention to introduce this bill is to harass minority with its draconian provisions. One can say if you don’t do forcible conversion, you don’t have to worry. But the provisions allow to arrest anyone with malicious intention of allegation/complaint of attempting to convert. If passed, it will draw international attention especially from democratic countries. It will be detrimental for not only Karnataka but also for India when the country is seeking foreign investments. Christianity may be minority in India, but it is a prominent religion in developed countries and therefore, it hurts their religious feelings too. My question is what Karnataka is gaining by passing this bill? Is it religious fanatics idea in a secular country? India is known for intelligent brains. We should think about it objectively irrespective of religion and join hands in protesting.

The Andamenese And Amozanians tribes may be much happy with their own native beleifs do not try the conversion business there. The Native tribes who live in their own way must be left alone

Why a person seeking willful conversion needs to get permission from a govt official and it is at the desecration of the give official. This is a grave violation of one’s fundamental right to religion. This BJP govt dictating rights to people rather than rights are by birth and fundamental and no govt has any say and interference in it. Choice of partner for marriage, choice of food and now choice of religion, finally a law to vote only BJP and anyone votes against BJP will be punishable by law. Looks like BJP is nervous and scared if it loses power it will be gallows from top to bottom for all its attrocities against the humanity and violation of constitution.
