Kasargod: Thief Held, Seven kg Gold Ornaments Recovered

Kasargod, Nov 29: A team led by the local deputy superintendent of police, Jose Kurian, has succeeded in arresting the main accused in connection with the theft of about 18 kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 2.56 crore and Rs 75,000 in cash from Rajdhani Jewellery located in the heart of Kanhangad town on April 16 this year.

The arrested thief has been identified as Abdul Latif (24), a resident of Kanhangad. Seven kilograms of gold ornaments was recovered from him. Latif, who used to work as an auto rickshaw driver in the past, had suddenly begun to lead a luxurious life. The policemen had noticed this development, and kept a close watch on his movements. After they took him into custody on suspicion and questioned him, Latif reportedly confessed that he was involved with the said robbery, said superintendent of police, B Prakash, addressing a press conference here.

The policemen said that the accused had recently built a new house, and had also bought a two-storied house. Besides, two cars and three sites were recently acquired by him in the district. He also had plans to set up a business, they disclosed. They are now on the look for five accomplices of Latif.

It may be recalled that when the employees of Rajdhani Jewellery had closed the shutters of their showroom and gone to a nearby mosque for offering prayers between 12.30 pm and 2 pm on April 16 this year, the thieves had gained entry into the shop by drilling a hole from the first floor of the building. Their act had come to the notice of the staff after they returned to the shop and found the jewellery missing.
