Mangaluru, Dec 21: Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) took out a protest march towards the DC’s office on Tuesday December 21 demanding a permanent end on quarrying and mining activities in the area around Karinjeshwar temple in Bantwal taluk.

The protestors demanded permanent ban on quarrying and mining activities in the surroundings of the temple to protect the sanctity of the temple. It may be recalled, a month ago, a protest was held in Bantwal where a month-long deadline was given to stop the quarrying and mining activities around the temple area. But the district administration had failed to respond to the demands which led to the protest march.

“The compound wall of the temple has collapsed due to stone quarrying in the vicinity and the front portion of the sanctum sanctorum has developed cracks. The roof of the kitchen has broken as a result of which rainwater seeps in. Use of explosives has been threatening the very existence of the temple. But the departments concerned and the district administration are not interested to take any steps to prevent this,” the protestors alleged.

Addressing the gathering near the Clock Tower, Nagasadhu Vitala Giri Maharaj said, “We will call all naga sadhus to Mangaluru, if necessary, in the fight for Karinja Kshetra. None of the protesters should get disheartened. We are with you.

“If you need Hindu votes, stop injustice that is being carried out around the Karinjeshwar temple. Illegal mining on Karinja Kshetra should be stopped. If we get into a protest no one can stop us. We are ready to preserve Karinja Kshetra at the cost of our lives. There is no need to test our patience. Naga sadhus have held discussions on this subject. We will call all Naga Sadhus to Mangaluru,” he said.

Addressing the protesters, Rajashekarananda Swamiji of Vajradehi Math said, “Our protest was successful in drawing the attention of the government. However, the officers, who are fast asleep like Kumbakharna, do not understand. A few days ago, the deputy commissioner visited Karinja Kshetra. We are happy about it. But he should have given the information to the media as to what exactly is happening at Karinja Kshetra. What you think of saints and Math seers? You are talking about law. What use is your law?”

Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sharan Pumpwell also took part in the protest.
