Mangaluru: ‘Beautiful Lengths’ hair donation drive held at St Aloysius College

Mangaluru, Dec 22: The Centre for Social Concern (CSC) at St Aloysius College, Indian Catholic Youth Movement, central council, diocese of Mangalore, Caritas India, CODP Sparsha - Campaign Against Cancer and Mercy Beauty Academy organised ‘Beautiful Lengths’ hair donation drive here at Eric Mathias hall St Aloysius College on Tuesday December 21.

As many as 50 donors aged from 12 to 70 donated their hair.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Melwin Pinto, rector, St Aloysius College said, “We should actually honour the donors who have come forward to donate their hair for those who are suffering from cancer.”

Fr Dr Praveen Martis, principal, St Aloysius College, said, “This is a good initiative. We always need to give something who are in need and this is the best way to help someone who is suffering.”

Irene Pinto, a 60-year-old hair donor from Padavinangady said, “I have seen my sister in hospital suffering from cancer. She was worried about hair fall. Hence, I decided to donate hair. I grew my hair and donated it.”

Tapasvi from second year BA from St Aloysius College said, “This was in my mind from long ago. I started growing my hair for this day. I feel really happy to donate my hair for cancer patients.”

Aishwarya from 2nd year Masters in St Aloysius College said, “Being a biology student, I read about the cancer where they will have hair fall. So I decided to donate my hair to cancer patients.”

Lenet Gonsalves, programme manager, CODP, Fr Ashwin Cardoza, director, ICYM Mangalore diocese, CODP programme coordinator Shilpa, president of ICYM Mangalore diocese Jaison Crasta, Veena D’Souza from Mercy Beauty Academy and oncologist Dr Karthik was also present.

Jennifer Mascarenhas, dean, extension services, St Aloysius College welcomed the gathering,

Coordinator of Centre for Social Concern Philomena Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks and Mazel Fernandes compered the event.

    Noble act from our mangalorean people to donate their beautiful hair to a sick people.Long and beautiful hair makes one more beatiful and sexy they say.A pride to many.Many dont want to cut their hair,Still I appriciate one who did it.Dont give it because all are doing .But with full heart to make one happy who doesnt have is more worth .Long or short,matters lttle only wish is more important.But did anyone found where this hair goes?Really who needs it gets without paying any cent?This hair will be marketed and sold later to professional buyers :They again sell to hair processing companys.and sell it hair dressures and so on.I really dont know who gets it free of cost.

    The hair collected from our drives were sent to an organisation which makes and supplies hair wigs free of cost to cancer patients. We have donated them free to two people from Mangalore.

    This program was initiated as natural hair wig costs from 15,000 rupees onwards which is not affordable for poor families. So the focus is to procure it free of cost and donate the wigs free of cost.
