Mangaluru, Dec 22: Railway traffic congestion at the central station here will be a thing of the past once the fourth and the fifth platforms are commissioned by September next year. This was stated by southern railway general manager John Thomas.
Thomas visited the central railway station here on Tuesday December 21 and scrutinized the railway systems and ongoing works. He told the media persons that pit line work at the central station is in progress and will be completed by March. After that the work on new platforms wil be taken up and completed in six months’ time. Grants have already been released and the task of entrusting the work on contract basis is on, he stated.
He also said that the new platforms will pave way for running more trains from this station in tune with the demands of the people from the district. Railway divisional manager of Palakkad, Trilok Kothari, was present.
On this occasion, members of West Coast Railway Yatri Abhivriddhi Committee handed over a petition to Thomas seeking addition of second entry point from the direction of Attavar, running of Gomateshwara Express day train till the central station, extension of Puttur passenger train till Subrahmanya road, extension of Mumbai CST Express train to central station, giving halt for Matsyagandha Express train in Mangaluru Junction station etc. The general manager promised to consider the demands.
Members of Railway Consumers Advisory Committee, Hanumanth Kamath and Ahmed Bava, as well as Anil Hegde and G K Bhat of West Coast Railway Yatri Abhivriddhi Samiti were present.
