Mangaluru: Financial hardship drives 19-year-old engineering student to suicide

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Dec 26: In a tragic incident, a student died by suicide at Suratkal on Sunday December 26.

The deceased has been identified as Sourav Kumar Yadav (19), son of Suresh Prasad Yadav, a native of Oraiya village in Jamui district in Bihar.

He was pursuing 2nd year electrical and electronics engineering at NITK Suratkal.

A death note was found, wherein Saurav is understood to have stated that he was going through financial crisis, and that he also felt a sort of 'chemical reaction' in his brain. He was pursuing studies with the help of education loan.

He was found hanging in his room. It is learnt that he had earlier attempted suicide when he was in SSLC.

Police sources said that his parents are poor and do not have provision to come to collect his mortal remains, and have asked that Saurav be cremated in Mangaluru.

Sources said that NITK staff and students are making arrangements so that his parents can reach Mangaluru.

It’s tragic and very saddened to read about happenings in my alma mater Seeking help on mental health issues are still a taboo, it turns out There are many avenues set up by the alumni for such students, but if the word didn’t get to this needy student, it needs to be investigated It’s been very painful to read some reader comments that attempt to turn it into a political perspective and involving the administration, and equally shameful that they do so. Let’s not turn this into a mud slinging match , let’s do something

I am just shocked to hear this.He is so poor ,was learning with help of loan ,now he is dead. What about loan?Should his parents pay back this? Why children dont think of their parents? In his death note he wrote about some reaction in his head means he was having some psychological trouble as before .?We heard so many such problems of poor students. What I feel at present ,is why cant some one start a help to such poor students to study by collecting money instead of building big Majestic Mandirs for Gods ,only to show others by collecting money?Dont mistake me that Iam not pointing out Ram Mandir but a example. So that poor students life can be saved ,or help family to come forward? Some can donate money ?In UAE ,I heard some lokal unions help ,?May his soul rest in peace.Poor parents now lost last hopes of a better living now.Heartfelt sympathy to the family.

Poor and needy students can be helped by the money being spent on churches, mosques, madrasas and imams too.

Om Shanthi. Children of current generation undergo lots of stress and fear about their future . I had a neighbour who secured rank in Psychiatric medicine , government doctor, his wife too was a doctor soft spoken ,good character lady , had 2 brilliant kids, no headache to look after his or his wife's parents or relatives . As usual after his family went to bed, this doctor has swallowed many sleeping tablets . On the next day while his wife got up, she saw the empty strips of tablets. He couldn't be revived . Happened in Indira Gandhi's rule. How can Indra Gandhi blamed for his act? Few people always point Modi. Aren't they alive from 2014? Suicide is state of mind at that time . Even a healthy ,wealthy, literate may commit it when he feels insecure including you and me. Even animals, birds, fish commit suicide .

Extremely sad to read that a young life has been lost mainly due to a so called well known Institution which boasts of world class structure, high quality education blah blah. If it had everything in order , how could it not spot a recluse who felt he had no shoulder to lean on . Surely his persona , his conduct and his interactions with his classmates and faculty would have shown red flags for a long time . But who cares ? It is indeed a tragedy that even educational Institutions with hig repute are not grounded to know what is amiss among the students. All students do not come from a privileged background . Their dress , interactions will surely be visible to all . But if one is left alone, this is the only way out of the misery. Very sad for the parents who will continue to suffer and suffer in their twilight years.

I am speachless...!!!!, there are so many good Samaritans around in M 'lore, who could have extended their help... what a great loss...!!!! The toxic atmosphere in the society is created by hyper sensitive organizations.... leading to a kind of phobia, insecurity among young children & young graduates... now a days..., they are too much worried about future..., these young minds even hesitate to discuss the matter with their own parents/siblings... coz they know their day to day hardship... living on a hand to mouth means...!!!!,

May Sourav soul rest in eternal peace. One cannot get seat in electrical and electronics engineering in NIT'S unless he is hard working and brilliant. It is so sad that his parents are poor and cannot collect his mortal remains. Condolences to his parent's, May Almighty God grant strength to bear the loss.

The fact that he got admission into a premier institution like NITK proves that he's brilliant. But also the fact that he had attempted suicide once earlier too proves that he was having suicidal tendency. May be timely psychiatric treatment could've helped. The institution must be having some professional counsellors.

This is for everyone who is blaming NITK authorities... NITK is having a lot of arrangements for mental health and all things related to it. Even elections have mental health as main agenda.. so blaming the authorities and management is utter useless..

National Institute of Technology, earlier known as Regional Engineering College is a prestigious institution, second only to IIT. To get admission into it, the student should be very bright. It looks that this institution does not have a Counsellor, a person trained to give guidance on personal or psychological problems. Many of the Catholic schools and colleges in main cities, have a trained MSW Counsellor. Also, in western countries and Canada, students are allowed to work part time 4 hours per day to augment their tuition, boarding and lodging expenses. Unfortunately, such facility is not there in our country as unemployment is looming large on even educated and highly educated persons. Very unfortunate that this bright student had to undergo financial hardship together with a problem associated with psychology.

Shit. This is really very sad. He must hav been an ideal student, coming from humble poor background, worked hard inspite of no privelege, got a seat in nitk, but still had to give up. Whereas Modis rich friends dont have to worry despite thousands of crores of loans as they will be borne by govt banks out of tax payers money.
